In recognition of National HVAC Tech Day, UA Hope-Texarkana is highlighting the important work of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration technicians and encouraging students to consider training for a career in this high-demand field.
HVAC technicians help keep homes, schools, businesses, hospitals, and industrial facilities safe and comfortable year-round. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers was $59,810 in May 2024, and employment in the field is projected to grow 8 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. The BLS also projects about 40,100 job openings each year in the field over the decade.
In Arkansas, HVAC careers are also expected to remain strong. O*NET reports that employment for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers in Arkansas is projected to grow 10 percent from 2022 to 2032, with about 390 annual job openings during that period.
UA Hope-Texarkana offers both a Certificate of Proficiency and a Technical Certificate in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. The programs provide hands-on training in HVAC systems, electrical components, troubleshooting, safety, and industry practices to help prepare students for entry into the workforce.
“National HVAC Tech Day is a great opportunity to recognize the skilled professionals who keep our communities running,” said Jennifer Teresa, UAHT Dean of Technical Programs. “It is also a great reminder that students can train locally at UA Hope-Texarkana for a career that offers strong job opportunities and competitive wages.”
Students can enroll now for the fall semester of HVAC classes at UA Hope-Texarkana. Eligible students may also qualify to have their classes paid for through the Arkansas Future Grant, also known as the ArFuture Grant. The grant helps Arkansas students pursue education and training in STEM or regional high-demand fields and covers tuition and fees for qualifying certificate and associate degree programs.
The fall application deadline for the ArFuture Grant is July 1. The grant is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
