The team was recognized for its outstanding collaborative service and innovative, data-driven approach to preparing highly effective educators. Through mentoring hundreds of teacher residents, strengthening partnerships with regional school districts, advancing equitable educational practices, and improving outcomes for PK-12 students, the team has made a transformative and lasting contribution to UTEP, the Borderplex community, and the future of education.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Dr. Juan Martinez, our UTEP College of Education 2026 Gold Nugget recipient! Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition! 🧡⛏️

Clint Independent School District

The journey of 2026 Gold Nugget recipient Juan Martinez, Ed.D., ’93, ’96, ’17 is a testament to the transformational power of education. A first-generation college student and graduate of what is now the Woody L. Hunt College of Business and UTEP College of Education, Martinez built a career dedicated to helping students and educators overcome barriers and achieve their goals.
Martinez now serves as the superintendent of Clint Independent School District.

Reflecting on his career in education, he said, “I see my work as a mission of supporting students in realizing their potential and creating pathways to success.”

The UTEP College of Education recently hosted the Hopper Dean Center of Excellence for K-12 Computer Science Education Working Session, bringing together faculty in Education and Computer Science to celebrate a year of impact and plan for the future of computer science and AI education in our region.

The working session highlighted the Center's impact in advancing computer science education through educator professional learning, teacher certification, and the K–12 AI Learning Incubator, and engaged in planning for this year’s Hopper Dean K-12 Fellows and Scholars selection process. Today the UTEP College of Education hosted the Built Here Summit, a regional gathering to explore the future of AI education and work in El Paso. The college and its partners have helped position El Paso as an emerging leader for artificial intelligence, training over 700 educators in AI and computer science principles and reaching 25,000+ K-12 students in just 22 months.
