As part of our 50 Voices of Nursing celebration, we are proud to feature Sally Deitch, MSN, MHA, RN, FACHE, a UTEP Nursing alumna whose journey reflects the extraordinary possibilities of a nursing education.

From beginning her career as a 22-year-old operating room nurse at the bedside to leading nursing and operations infrastructure for one of the country’s largest healthcare systems, Sally says her compass was forged at UTEP.

Her UTEP education prepared her to navigate systemic complexity, build effective workflows under pressure, and view nursing as a high-stakes, high-intellect calling rooted in the dignity of every person.

Sally’s advice to today’s students: Take a breath and recognize that you have earned your seat at the table. Build your character with fierce integrity, embrace servant leadership, work hard, remain curious, and find humor and joy amid the chaos of care.

“We rise together or we don’t rise at all. Show the world what UTEP nurses can do! Picks Up!”

As we celebrate 50 years of the UTEP College of Nursing, we proudly recognize alumni like Sally whose leadership, grit, compassion, and service continue to shape the future of healthcare.

💙🧡 50 Voices of Nursing | Featuring John Duran

From the bedside to healthcare leadership, UTEP Nursing alumnus John Duran continues to carry the values of compassion, service, and patient-centered care throughout his career.

Reflecting on his journey, John credits his UTEP education with shaping not only the nurse he became, but also the leader he strives to be. His advice to future nurses is to embrace challenges, remain curious, and never underestimate where a nursing degree can take them.

As we celebrate 50 years of Leadership, Innovation, and Excellence, John’s story reminds us that leadership in healthcare begins with taking care of people.

🧡💙 Celebrating 50 Voices of Nursing 
Meet Darrell Benko, MSN, APRN, PMHNP-BC, AGPCNP-BC, ACHPN, a UTEP Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student whose journey reflects the limitless possibilities of nursing. 
“Being part of 50 years of UTEP Nursing excellence makes me proud to be part of a legacy that has had a direct impact on the health of El Paso, the Borderland and beyond.” 
From direct patient care to advanced practice and mentorship, Darrell is continuing his education as a DNP student while contributing to mental health, primary care, education, and improved access to care. 
His advice to today’s nursing students is simple: remain curious and never let your current role define the limits of what nursing can become for you. As knowledge and responsibilities grow, protect the human connection that helps every patient feel heard, respected, and valued.

What a special Homecoming for the UTEP College of Nursing!

As we celebrate 50 years of excellence, leadership and innovation, our Homecoming Breakfast brought together alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends to celebrate the people and memories that have shaped our College. 🎉

This year was even more meaningful as we celebrated two UTEP Nursing alumni and 2026 Gold Nugget Award recipients: Glenda Villatoro ’98 and Tasha Phillina Hopper ’98, ’12. 🏆 Both have built remarkable careers in healthcare and continue to make an impact through leadership and service in the El Paso community.

As we celebrate 1976–2026, we are grateful for everyone who has been part of our story. A special thank you and congratulations to everyone who made Homecoming Week and our Nursing Homecoming Breakfast possible! 💙🧡

As part of our 50 Voices of Nursing series, we are proud to highlight Dr. Lauretta N. Stubbs, DNP, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, whose journey reflects the lasting impact of UTEP Nursing.

Beginning her journey as an international student, Dr. Stubbs found support, encouragement, and opportunity at the UTEP College of Nursing. Inspired by faculty and nursing leaders throughout her education and clinical experiences, she continued her commitment to lifelong learning, earning both her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from UTEP.

Today, Dr. Stubbs continues to serve the Paso del Norte region and give back to the community that helped shape her journey. Her message to future generations of nurses is simple: never stop learning. Continued growth in knowledge and skills expands one’s ability to provide exceptional care and make a lasting impact on patients and communities.

🌼 Congratulations to our Summer 2026 DAISY Award honoree, Nissa Ramirez!

From the beginning of her nursing journey, Nissa has stood out for the thoughtfulness, compassion, and intention she brings to every patient interaction. During her fundamentals experience at a long-term care facility, she formed a meaningful connection with an older patient who was known to be reserved and quiet. Through her kindness and genuine interest, he began sharing his stories, smiling when she approached, and expressing how happy he was to have her caring for him.

That same compassion was evident during Nissa’s NICU rotation, where she cared for a critically vulnerable infant while also supporting parents who were experiencing fear and uncertainty. Her comforting words, reassurance, and dedication gave them confidence that their baby was being cared for and protected even when they could not be there.

Nissa strives to treat every patient—regardless of age—with respect, kindness, and empathy, leaving a lasting impression on the patients and families she serves. 🧡💙

Congratulations, Nissa, on this well-deserved recognition and for embodying the true spirit of the DAISY Award! 🌼✨

2026 Gold Nugget Award recipient Glenda Villatoro ’98 is the chief operating officer of Del Sol Medical Center and has spent her career serving the El Paso community through compassionate health care leadership. A proud alumna of UTEP with a B.S. in Nursing, she continues to make an impact both professionally and through community service.

“My education at UTEP provided me with far more than a nursing degree; it instilled the values of leadership, service, lifelong learning and advocacy,” she said.
