Postcards from a Miner: Argentina Mosso ’27. 🇹🇭

“Thailand holds warmth all over it, and in its people exist the culture I now miss constantly.”

Argentina and her love for the world took her to Thailand, where she experienced the beauty of a unique culture throughout the four months of her exchange program. This Miner brought back home the ultimate souvenir from Bangkok—memories (and food cravings) that will last a lifetime. 💙

2026 Gold Nugget recipient Juan Sanchez ’94, ’96 set out to become an engineer early on, but it was at UTEP where he discovered a path in metallurgical engineering that would shape his career and his connection to the community. A graduate of the college now known as the Miguel A. Loya College of Engineering, Sanchez has spent 30 years with Freeport-McMoRan, supporting regional industry while mentoring and recruiting future UTEP engineers.

Reflecting on his experience, Sanchez said, “The opportunities I received at UTEP shaped my career and inspired me to give back. Supporting students and strengthening partnerships between the university and industry is one way I can help the next generation of engineers succeed.”

"When I came back to UTEP, I found community. I found people like me, and I finally felt like I belonged."

That sense of belonging inspired UTEP alum Georgina Hernandez '05 to build a career centered on service and leadership.

Today, as President and CEO of United Way of El Paso County, Hernandez is helping create lasting impact by supporting local nonprofits, investing in early childhood education and strengthening communities across the Borderland.

Christian M. Salas ’12, ’14, ’16, a graduate of UTEP’s College of Liberal Arts and College of Health Sciences, built his career in social work through a path shaped by exploration and service. Today, he serves as an associate professor of social work at El Paso Community College, where he leads efforts in student mental health and community outreach while holding leadership roles in statewide and local social work organizations.

“Through social work, I’ve learned the importance of not just having a seat at the table but making it count,” he said.

The journey of 2026 Gold Nugget recipient Juan Martinez, Ed.D., ’93, ’96, ’17 is a testament to the transformational power of education. A first-generation college student and graduate of what is now the Woody L. Hunt College of Business and UTEP College of Education, Martinez built a career dedicated to helping students and educators overcome barriers and achieve their goals.
Martinez now serves as the superintendent of Clint Independent School District.

Reflecting on his career in education, he said, “I see my work as a mission of supporting students in realizing their potential and creating pathways to success.”

Long before becoming chief executive officer of The Hospitals of Providence East Campus, 2026 Gold Nugget recipient Tasha Phillina Hopper ’98, ’12 was already living her lifelong dream as a labor and delivery nurse.

Her first degree from the UTEP College of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, fueled her passion for patient care, and her second degree, a Master of Science in Nursing Systems Management, advanced her path into leadership. She went on to lead the construction and opening of The Hospitals of Providence Transmountain Campus.

“I learned how to lead, work as a team [and] embrace empathy for patients and my team,” Hopper said.

Mark your calendars for Sept. 20-26! Whether it's your first time back since graduation or your yearly tradition, there's no better time to reconnect with old friends, revisit your favorite campus spot and celebrate everything it means to be a Miner.

Alumni Association Board Member Javier Aguilar ’17, ’21, knows the feeling: "I recommend that other UTEP alumni visit the campus, reconnect with faculty, visit their favorite campus spot or tour the new buildings."

Javier’s favorite spot is the view of Centennial Plaza from outside Union West — but yours is waiting to be rediscovered too.
