Congratulations to Dr. Amanda de Oliveira Barros, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering (IMSE), and Vinícius Xavier, a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering, on having their research accepted to the 2026 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), one of the world's premier robotics conferences.

Their paper introduces a soft magnetic walking robot designed to retrieve missing IUD strings, offering a promising minimally invasive alternative to conventional clinical procedures.
Out of 4,348 submissions, only 1,585 papers were accepted, resulting in a 36% acceptance rate. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement!

The future of mining starts at UTEP.

We're proud to support the relaunch of Texas' only mining engineering program in 2027, helping prepare the next generation of engineers to meet the nation's growing demand for critical minerals and strengthen America's energy and manufacturing future.
Read more below. ⬇️

The U.S. is working to accelerate mining engineering and UTEP is, too. ⛏️ Last week, the federal government announced a more than $100 million investment in mining education. UTEP President Heather Wilson was present for the announcement and roundtable discussions. In 2027, the UTEP Mining Engineering program will relaunch, becoming the only such program in the state of Texas.

🚀 Back-to-back international success!
For the second consecutive year, UTEP's Sun City Summit rocket team has earned second place in the 30,000-foot Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) category at the 2026 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC), the world's largest collegiate rocketry competition.

Competing against 143 teams from 16 countries, the student-led team demonstrated remarkable engineering precision, launching a rocket that reached 29,714 feet — within about 1% of the 30,000-foot target altitude.

This achievement is the result of months of design, manufacturing, testing and teamwork by 93 students representing Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering and the Hunt College of Business.
Congratulations to our talented students, faculty advisor Dr. Jaeyoung Cho and everyone who helped make this incredible accomplishment possible!
