Join UTEP DEERS for the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 10:15 AM! 🌎🏫

Earthquakes can happen anywhere—even here in El Paso. The Great ShakeOut is a great opportunity to practice the simple steps that can help keep you safe during an earthquake:

🛡️ COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk
✋ HOLD ON until the shaking stops

Practicing today helps build muscle memory and prepares you for an earthquake wherever you may be.

Our students, mostly from the UTEP SEG Student Chapter, spent the week at the SEG annual meeting attending technical sessions, presenting their work, and connecting with geoscientists from around the world.

A special thank you to Joshua Lewis (MSc, 2022), whose generous support made it possible for many of our students to attend. Your investment in the next generation of UTEP geoscientists means a lot to us.

We also want to recognize Luis Yagual (MS, 2025) and Jose Franco (PhD student), who served as volunteers with SEG’s national organization during the conference.

It was great to reconnect with our alumni Paola Salas (BS, 2025) and David Muller (MS, 2023). Seeing former Miners thriving in the field is always a highlight.

We’re proud of our students for representing UTEP DEERS and UTEP SEG so well. Picks up! ⛏️

Got an Earth science idea you haven’t had the funding to try? DEERS has $1,500 for one student to make it happen! 🌎

The Endowed Earth Science Discoveries Initiative is open to UTEP undergrad and grad students in Geological Sciences, Geophysics, and Environmental Science. Your project can tie into your current research, or it can be something completely new.

Send a one-page proposal with your idea and goals, what makes it innovative, a budget and timeline, and how the money would help get it off the ground. Funds can go toward fieldwork, supplies, lab costs, conferences, or professional development. Proposals have to be your own work, so no AI-generated submissions will be accepted.

Email it to Dr. Mark Engle at [email protected] with “EESDI Proposal” in the subject line. Deadline is October 30 at 5 PM MT.
