Last week, UTEP celebrated homecoming week and our department had so much to be proud of 🥳

Juan Sanchez, a metallurgical and materials engineering graduate, was one of this year’s Gold Nugget Award recipients. Juan has had an impressive career at Freeport McMoRan and has shown our department so much support over the years 🧡💙

We couldn’t be happier!! We loved celebrating you, Juan!

Meet Emilio 👋🏼 He graduated with his Ph.D in 2025 and now he works at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory! He is going to be working on 🌀radiation🌀and learning how it affects spacecrafts ✈️🚀

Why don’t we start off our bright week with some COLOR 🌀💜📒📊🎈🦠🚦🫧😍

This is a TITANIUM, ALUMINUM, and VANADIUM alloy!! We use a special microscope that allows us to take this colorful image. The different colors represent groups of atoms that are pointed in different directions ⬆️➡️⬇️⬅️

One of our biomedical engineering professors, Dr. P**n, is leading research in lipid nano particles that are in cancer cells!! 🫨

Pink = lipid nanoparticles
Blue = the nucleus of the cell
Green = the endoplasmic reticulum of the cell
Red = the membrane of the cell

Check out this cool equipment our students have been working with recently in our Dynamic Materials Lab! This is an Arc Melter, and it’s used to melt metals at suuuper high temperatures to create new materials 🙂‍↕️
