Day 28

We started off our day by doing our Berlin discovery assignment. We split up into groups and explored the different “voids” of Berlin. Urban Planning, War and Political conflict. Researching these voids helps us better understand the impact they have on the city in both its past and present.
Then we turned in all 87 of our sketchbooks for grading. With our newfound freedom we explored the city for a couple hours.
Finally we wrapped up the night with a group dinner at Lindenbräu where each of us shared our highlights of the trip over all you can eat German food.

We are coming to the tail end of our study abroad trip. Today’s fun and festivities began with mass at Sacred Heart. This is a reminder of how grateful I am for this experience and that none of it would be possible without God.

Since today was a free day, everyone chose to spend it differently. Some students used that time to sketch while others visited the zoo, explored the flea market, and wandered through the streets of Berlin.

With only a few days left on this journey, today was a meaningful reminder to slow down, appreciate where we are, and reflect on all that we’ve experienced together.

Today we explored some of Berlin’s most iconic architectural and cultural landmarks, including the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Reichstag Building. It was really interesting to see how architecture can shape collective memory, reflect civic identity, and influence the way people experience a place. One of the best parts of the day was our collaborative sketching critique, where we got to share ideas and learn from each other’s work. Another highlight was taking the huge elevator up to the top of the Reichstag, which offered incredible views of the city.

Guten Tag! Today we started out the day by going the Jewish Museum. The project by Daniel Libeskind was very cool to experience both from the inside and the outside. We were also able to understand some of the traditions in the Jewish culture and were also able to learn more about some of the sad truth that was the holocaust. We were able to understand more through the series of exhibitions that allowed us to feel the experience rather than see it. “Libeskind’s designs shift between figurative and abstract representation. Libeskind fostered remembrance through his architecture and offers experiences that bring the past into the present.”

For the remainder of the day we had free time. A group of us decided to go to Potsdamer Plats for lunch and some more sight seeing. We sketched and looked for some souvenirs before ending our day at Viktoria Park where the goat (Pedro) led us to a beautiful waterfall and some rose gardens.

Today we took the train from Prague to Berlin. After arriving, students split up into groups and explored the city. I got the chance to see one of my sophomore year precedents, the Quartier Schützenstraße, by Aldo Rossi. After a quick sketch and a tasty pizza, I met with my peers at the Sony Center, by Helmut Jahn. The trip back to the hotel also gave us the opportunity to see the Reichstag Building, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

Day 21: Today was A travel and Exploritory day.

We arrived in Prague around 4:30pm after a 4 hour train ride. For our Exploritory day assignment we were told to explore the area following our senses other than sight.  I chose to follow the warmth of the setting sun and the sound of live music.

[Day 20] •Free Day•
Today was a free day! We decided to go to Schönbrunn Palace and hundertwasserhaus! It was a perfect day for exploring and sketching other than some rain here and there. It was so relaxing and fun to explore Vienna on our own! Groups explored different areas of Vienna such as Belvedere Palace, various coffee shops and even the zoo!! It was a great way to end our time in Vienna, Austria! We’re off to Prague tomorrow. Tschüss Vienna!!
