ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) will partner with several local mutual aid agencies for a full-scale exercise to focus on coordinated community response to an active threat on campus.

The exercise will be June 5-7 in the K.E. White Graduate Center and involve 15 different agencies including Sentara Albemarle, Nightingale Medical Evacuation, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Elizabeth City Fire Department, and the Elizabeth City Police Department.

The university’s Emergency Operation Group (EOG) will attempt to simulate a real event as closely as possible to test operational capability of emergency management systems in a highly stressful environment.

This multi-agency and multi-discipline exercise is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of response procedures.

Three plans will be incorporated into the exercise—the crisis response evacuation plan, emergency communications standard operating procedure, and the ECSU crisis communication plan.

June 5 is scheduled to be the most interactive day of the exercise, with all agencies participating in scenarios of an actual active threat. The training will continue June 6 with the EOG members taking part.

This Full-Scale Active Assailant Exercise is a crucial opportunity for ECSU and its partner agencies to test and improve their emergency response capabilities. It is important to note that this is an exercise and there is no threat to the surrounding community or university personnel.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: on June 5, 2024 the following buildings will be closed for training purposes:

1) Ridley Student Center
2) Ridley Post Office
3) Viking Lanes (Bowling Alley)

If there are any questions please contact, the Office of Environmental Health & Safety on (252)335-4607.

Today, April 8th, 2024, there will be a Partial Solar Eclipse visible from the entire Pasquotank County region and campus of Elizabeth City State University. The eclipse will begin around 2:03 PM local time and conclude at 4:31 PM. There will be maximum coverage of 85% at around 3:19 PM and there is an exception of a drop in temperature and illumination but never complete darkness.

It is safe to walk around outside during this time. However, please be aware of distracted drivers and pedestrians.

According to the “Associated Press”, staring directly at the sun during a solar eclipse can lead to permanent eye damage. The sun’s bright rays can burn cells in the retina and because the retina has no pain receptors there is no way to feel the damage as it occurs. Once the cell in the retina dies, they do not come back!

To see the sun safely, you can use:

-Projection on screen (pinhole on a box projecting an image of the sun on a paper.)

-ISO 12312-2 Certified Eclipse Glasses (These need to be undamaged! If you still have eclipse glasses from 2017, make sure that the filters have not detached from the cardboard nor have the filters folded nor punctured. The ISO 12312-2 certification needs to be clearly printed on them. If in doubt, don’t use!)

-Welder’s #14 glass plates.

ECSU’s Emergency Management Coordinator and ECSU C.E.R.T Co Advisor, Mr. David Hill Jr. was able to take 18 amazing students to New Mexico Tech the Energetic Materials Research and Training Center. Our ECSU students and C.E.R.T members were able to study and train in the response to bombing incidents, through partnership with FEMA.

Surprise, Surprise, while at the Albuquerque Airport, members of our ECSU C.E.R.T team had a run in with Keith David , and the encounter was pleasant and engaging.
