Today, Friday, June 19, the Social Work program celebrates and observes Juneteenth, the historic day marking the end of slavery in the United States. Often called Freedom Day, this day in 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
This pivotal moment reflects the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Black communities. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated nationwide with cultural events and community traditions that honor freedom, progress, and perseverance.
