ELECT Sharon J. Warden to ECPPS School Board Outside City Limits : 2 seats available-November Ballot

"Everyone who remembers his own education My name is Sharon J.

Warden, and I am asking for your vote in November. My desire is to serve my community as an effective, informed, and pro-active Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County School Board member. I have lived in this community-this Harbor of Hospitality-my entire life. I attended public school here, graduating from Northeastern in 1974. I attended College of the Albemarle for two years after graduation, then co

ntinued my college education at East Carolina University. I graduated in 1978 with a BS degree in Secondary Education/English, and I landed my first teaching job at Columbia High School in Columbia, NC. From there, I continued my career in Currituck County at JP Knapp Junior High School where I taught 7th grade English for over 7 years. After having my son, Brock, I decided to transfer to a position at Northeastern High School, teaching English to freshmen and juniors. While at NHS and with much support from the system, I went back to ECU and attained a Masters of Library Science. I worked at NHS as a librarian until 1999/2000 when I was hired to be the Head Media Specialist at Pasquotank County High School. After 32 years, I made the decision to retire and have been retired for the last 5 years. As a retiree I am very active -I serve on the Advisory Board for the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union and for 4 years, I served as chairperson; I serve on the board of the Albemarle Area United Way, where I chaired the Day of Caring event for 2014; I am an active participant in the Chrome Pony Mustang Club, serving as secretary for 3 years ; I am a member of the Mustang Club of America( a national club for Mustang enthusiasts; and, I have run for the school board two times before, coming within 5 votes the first time and within 300 the second time.

A Moment of Recognition from NCSBA

Students seated in a classroom and raising hands
As January draws to a close, we want to offer one final recognition and a huge thanks for the distinct work that you all do as school board members.

You face challenges on many fronts: immense pressures on local budgets, endless efforts to win trust with local families, uncertain funding streams, and a duty to ensure students receive a quality education. All this, while being accountable for the everyday operations of your school district (likely one of the largest employers in your county, as you well know).

Your job as a school board member is not one that you do for thanks and recognition. You also don’t do it for the glamor, either — choosing to spend time in your local board rooms reviewing policy updates, considering budget line items, and navigating relationships with your fellow board members. Instead, you serve because you care about your community, you care about the hard work of educators and administrators, and, in the face of all those challenges previously mentioned, you care about the well-being of students.

So, at the close of this School Board Appreciation month, we thank you for the care that you bring to your role. North Carolina’s public school systems rely on your leadership and dedication, and we hope you know that in the most challenging moments, you can rely on your association for assistance.

The decision to refile was made and I hope that I will continue to have community support. I want to continue my strong advocacy for public school education, especially for Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Schools.
