On October 2nd, CWU leadership, state lawmakers, Yakama Nation representatives, and generous donors gathered alongside the campus community for the ribbon-cutting of the new North Academic Commons (NAC)!

Remarks from CWU President Jim Wohlpart, university leaders, and key partners highlighted how community investment shapes the future of higher education. Dynamic spaces inside, like the Ben and Nancy Remak College of Arts and Humanities Advising Center, showcase the power of philanthropy by bringing academic support, collaboration, and student-centered resources directly to where learning happens.

Every gift to Central builds the learning environments of today and expands possibilities for generations of Wildcats to come.

Strong partnerships build a brighter future for Central Washington.

Thanks to generous continued support from Comprehensive Healthcare, Central Washington University is adding a new faculty position to support our Mental Health Counseling graduate program.

This investment directly expands program capacity, helps tackle critical regional healthcare shortages, and advances our goal toward national CACREP accreditation. Together, we’re shaping the highly skilled behavioral health leaders our region needs most.

CWU's newest building opens its doors to the public on October 2, and it's a landmark investment in arts and humanities education.

The North Academic Commons (NAC), a 104,200-square-foot facility along East Dean Nicholson Boulevard, will host a ribbon-cutting from 2-3 p.m., followed by self-guided tours starting at 3 p.m. Lawmakers, donors, community partners, and the CWU community will gather to celebrate a first-of-its-kind project in Washington, funded by the state Legislature and built with features like a Geo Eco Plant that heats and cools the building using renewable heat from the Ellensburg Aquifer, cross-laminated timber beams from Yakama Nation Forest Products, and a rooftop solar array.

The NAC will be home to History, Political Science, Law and Justice, Sociology, English, Philosophy and Comparative Religions, World Languages and Cultures, and the College of Arts and Humanities Dean's Office.

Inside, the Ben and Nancy Remak College of Arts and Humanities Advising Center bears the name of two longtime CWU supporters. Ben ('79), a CWU Foundation Board member, and Nancy, who serves on the CWU College of Arts and Humanities Advisory Board, have supported scholarships, athletics, and the Wildcat Pantry for years. Their latest gift now shapes an advising space designed to bring academic support closer to where students learn.

"The Remaks have spent years investing in the people and programs that make Central special," said CAH Dean Chris Redfearn. "Their gift in the CAH Advising Center is a lasting reflection of their generosity and their belief in supporting students today and creating opportunities for those students in the future."

Every summer, a growing number of CWU graphic design students step out of the classroom and into real jobs, working alongside professionals in departments across campus.

Through the ART 490 internship course, led by Art + Design Professor David Bieloh, students log between 200 and 400 work hours placed in offices like the Publicity Center, Marketing and Communications, Athletics, and University Advancement. About a dozen students are interning on campus this summer alone, with others placed at organizations across Washington.

For graduating senior Laura Allen, that meant running client meetings and coordinating vendor estimates in the Publicity Center. "I'm working with real-world clients across the university's departments, and I'm actively communicating with them to realize their vision," she said. For classmate Alex Littman, an internship with Auxiliary Marketing turned early nerves into real confidence: "It has made me gain confidence, not only in my own design abilities but also in my communication skills."

In Athletics, interns Daniel Walton and Ethan Magnaghi discovered new specializations entirely, sports design and motion graphics, that weren't part of their regular coursework.

Professor Bieloh sees the shift in his students every year. "I do see confidence levels improve all the time," he said. "They realize somebody values their work, and somebody needs their creativity."

CWU Dining Services earned two national honors at this year's NACUFS conference in New Orleans: a Gold for Employee Development Program of the Year and a Silver for Innovative Dining Program of the Year.

The Gold award recognizes the Student Leadership Program, introduced in 2020, which gives student employees a structured path to advance, take on mentorship roles, and develop real professional skills. With more than 300 student employees, the program has grown into something bigger than its original goals.

"It keeps getting more and more relevant to supporting that career readiness that we aspire to for our students," said Dining Services Director Dean Masuccio. "A good amount of them continue their employment with us after graduation as a starting point for their careers, which is so rewarding to see."

The Silver for Innovative Dining recognized a program built on consistent listening—meeting regularly with student leadership to understand what the campus community needs and staying flexible enough to deliver it.

"Our team really cares about what they do, and our mission to serve our campus," Masuccio said. "This is a good reminder for us that our work matters, and that we're succeeding in what we're trying to accomplish."
