Cuisines of Malaysia and Singapore (Part 1)

We got to sample many cuisines over the three plus weeks we spent in Malaysia and Singapore. Here are some of the dishes. Hopefully, they will get the foodie in you to want to visit these two countries.

After immersing ourselves in Malaysia and Singapore over the last three weeks, it was time for us to head back to Chicago. We were sad to bid farewell to the warm weather, and braced ourselves for the frigid cold.

We had our farewell dinner before heading to the airport. Goodbye Malaysia (and Singapore). We will cherish the memories and the friends we made here.

We spent the first day of Chinese New Year by visiting the KL Tower to take in the view of the city from the observation deck. This marked the last official activity before we left for Chicago. We were now free to explore the city!

Jan 28, 2025 (Part 2)

In the afternoon, we were excited to celebrate the Chinese New Year by attending a reunion dinner with a local Chinese family (graciously hosted by Dr. Siaw-Peng Wan’s family). We took part in the celebration by decorating the community hall with home-made decorations and store-bought decors.

We started the buffet dinner with the traditional Yee Sang salad (i.e., the prosperity toss salad). We learned to shout out Chinese phrases related to fortune and prosperity as we tossed the salad. There were so many other dishes that we were stuffed!

Jan 28, 2025 (Part 1)

As the last scheduled academic event of our trip, we visited the Malaysian-American Commission on Education Exchange (MACEE), which administers and manages the Fulbright Programs in Malaysia. Their primary objective is to bring scholars (both faculty and students) from the US to Malaysia and from Malaysia to the US.

This was originally scheduled for the day we arrived in Kuala Lumpur, but we had to reschedule because of flight delay. This was a blessing in disguise because we didn’t have to combat jet lag, and were able to appreciate what the Fulbright Program is trying to accomplish in Malaysia after spending a few weeks here.

Jan 27, 2025 (Part 2)

The original plan to visit the Petronas Towers was cancelled (and rescheduled) due to the heavy downpour in the late afternoon. When the rain finally stopped early in the evening, a number of us decided to visit the site because two of our guests were leaving in a day and would have missed the opportunity.

Seeing the building lit up for Chinese New Year was a sight to behold. We also took a short walk to the Saloma Link Bridge that connects the new part and the old part of the city.

As we trekked back to our hotel, we decided to have a late night snack of roti canai and roti tissue with beverages. The whole meal cost only USD 11 for all of us!

Jan 27, 2025 (Part 1)

After several intensive days of out-of-town visits, we had a “slower” day as we prepared for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations. We visited two religious sites—the Thean Hou Temple and the Putra Mosque (i.e., Pink Mosque).

p.s. There are limited photos because the primary photographer of this page missed the trip.

Jan 26, 2025 (Part 3)

We ended the day attending the Encore Melaka performance, which took place in a theater built specifically for the show with a 360-degree rotating stage. The show depicts the history and culture of Melaka, complete with spectacular special effects. It was a show not to be missed.

Jan 26, 2025 (Part 2)

We spent the rest of the afternoon visiting various historical sites of Melaka, such as the Dutch Square, A Famosa, the Church of St. Paul, Jonker Street, etc. Some of us truly embraced being tourists by going on tricycle rides and trying desserts in a well known tourist trap. We were hoping to explore more of the historical sites, but our plan was dampened by a sudden downpour. By the time the weather cleared up, we had to head to the Encore Melaka performance.

Jan 26, 2025 (Part 1)

We got on the road early to visit Melaka, another UNESCO World Heritage site in Malaysia. Our first stop was the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum, which was the former residence of a wealthy Peranakan family. The visit helped us better understand the Peranakan culture, which was developed through the intermarriage of Chinese men and local women (mostly Malays).
