The next generation of journalists is here!

This week, welcomed 18 high school students from eight states for the fifth Emerging Journalists Program Immersion cohort.

Over the course of 12 days, the students will sharpen their skills in reporting, writing, multimedia storytelling, leadership and media management while working together in a newsroom environment. Along the way, they'll produce web stories, a newspaper and a television news broadcast.

Today, the cohort is visiting WUNC News, ABC11 WTVD-TV and the North Carolina State Capitol, where students will learn from journalists, media professionals and state leaders.

“At a moment when trust, information and news literacy feel more important than ever, it’s encouraging to spend time with students who care deeply about reporting and serving their communities,” said Kelly Furnas, associate teaching professor of journalism and EJP curriculum coordinator.

We were elated to welcome back Elon alumna Katherine Blunt ’15 () to campus this week as the graduate Commencement speaker for the Class of 2026.

Now a San Francisco-based reporter for The Wall Street Journal, Blunt covers Google and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on search and technology infrastructure.

In her May 20 address in Alumni Gym, Blunt acknowledged the uncertainty facing graduates entering a workforce rapidly reshaped by AI, while also emphasizing the importance of curiosity, critical thinking and perseverance.

“As scholars, we have a responsibility to challenge AI’s assumptions in the same way we’ve learned to challenge our own,” Blunt said, “to treat it as a debate partner or research assistant, to find new ways to augment our thinking, not replace the process.”

Blunt reminded graduates that the value of their education came not just from the final product, but from the growth that happened along the way.

“You didn’t skip the struggle,” she said. “You embraced the chance to grow.”

Thursday’s annual awards ceremony had everything. ❤️

More than 35 outstanding students were recognized. Faculty shared stories about once wide-eyed first-year students growing into confident young professionals. The student photographer working the event was even called up to receive an award. There was also an unexpected lesson about rabbit eyelids!

Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees for elevating the School of Communications through your creativity, leadership and commitment to excellence.
