Students took a tour of Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Rutledge, MO to learn about this community based on shared values that include minimizing consumerism and their ecological impact. Besides seeing a variety of building techniques (such as straw bail construction and Earthship), the students learned about how Dancing Rabbit does community design and governance, with lots of discussion about the intentional development of subcommunities, social architecture, management of common spaces and resources, parameters for consensus-based decision making, and how community rules evolve. Thank you Daniel for the amazing tour!

Earth day was so beautiful this past Saturday. The clothes closet displayed a selection of beautiful clothes, Erin Lane offered a yoga class, friends got together to make jewelry, the bio department brought their animals, Ronja made paper, Billy brought the solar car, and the picknick provided a delicious lunch. Thank you to the Sustainability Club for pulling this beautiful event together!

Students in SUS 250: Energy and Living Systems visited Alton’s wastewater treatment plant. Illinois American Water, the owner and operator of the plant, gave an excellent tour of all of the steps that go into treating the sewage before the water returns to the Mississippi. Students even got to see a tardigrade in a water sample being tested!
