Emory & Henry Theatre Department

Emory & Henry Theatre Department Our Theatre Program offers BA and BFA tracks: the BA provides a broad foundation in theatre, while the BFA delivers intensive, professional training.

Both tracks feature expert faculty and state-of-the-art facilities for a thorough educational experience. Theatre at Emory & Henry is a rapidly growing program that currently supports about 40 majors, 4 Full Time Faculty, and many other Theatre Professionals from our community. Our program is for students serious about pursuing a career in the theatre. We have pre-professional conservatory-style t

raining, embedded in a rigorous small liberal arts school environment. We offer B.F.A. degrees specializing in Musical Theatre, Directing & Stage Management, Performance and Design & Production. We also offer a traditional B.A. in Theatre, and also a newly created BA in Theatre with a Dance concentration. We do all this while still maintaining small class-sizes- which mean personal attention for our students- unlike the large conservatories or big state schools. Our unique and legendary association with the Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia, means our students get hands-on experience with professional theatre artists throughout their four-year degree. Additionally, the Department of Theatre is housed in the gorgeous Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center for the Arts where students study and perform on a 500-seat state of the art proscenium stage and in our new black box theatre.

🎭✨ One of our favorite parts of the Intro to the Profession Course is bringing the profession into the classroom!

Throughout the semester, Dr. Bremner welcomes working theatre professionals to E&H to share their experiences, talk about their careers, and give our students a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s really like to build a life in the theatre. From career paths to unexpected opportunities, these conversations help our students see the many possibilities waiting for them beyond graduation.

Last week, we started these visits with our partners at Barter Theatre. Producing Artistic Director Katy Brown sat down with our first year students to talk about theatre and a life of service. Thank you for sharing your experience, insight, and expertise with our students. 🌟

We’re building more than theatre artists. We’re preparing the next generation of theatre professionals.

“Find out who you are. And do it on purpose.” — Dolly Parton

These words have greeted students and future educators in Wiley Hall, reminding us that education is ultimately about helping people discover who they are and who they might become.

Today, we remember Dolly Parton not only as an Appalachian icon, but as an extraordinary champion for children and literacy. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, her commitment to putting books into the hands of children has helped nurture a love of reading in millions of young learners around the world. 📚❤️

Her music will endure, but so will the countless stories opened, dreams encouraged, and lives changed because she believed every child deserved the opportunity to read, learn, and dream.

Thank you, Dolly, for reminding us to dream more, learn more, care more, and be more. ❤️📚

We kicked things off with New Friend Bingo, giving our company a chance to connect, make some new friends, and learn a little more about the awesome people they’ll be creating with this semester.

A highlight of our summer every year is the Theatre Arts camp we host on campus for the children of Washington County. Now in our 5th year (Thank you 5!), this camp comes from a partnership between County Schools and Emory & Henry University. We were thrilled to have spent this past week welcoming 100 incredible, creative, and talented young artists from across our region to the incredible McGlothlin Center for the Arts at Emory & Henry University. Our days were filled with choreography, singing, acting, improvisation, lighting design, scenic design, costume design, directing and even a very special day with our partners Barter Theatre.

Theatre Camp Rocks! See you next year!
