McNair Staff Highlight: Ryan joined the TRIO McNair Scholars Program at Emporia State during the Summer of 2020, where he is currently the program’s Assistant Director and Research Specialist. His educational background includes earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, both at ESU. Prior to joining the McNair program, he instructed psychology courses at Butler Community College and ESU while also serving as the academic advisor for ESU’s Department of Psychology. Ryan was a first-generation, low-income student and has embraced the opportunity to assist students who come from a similar background and are seeking to overcome these obstacles by earning bachelor’s and graduate degrees. He also enjoys the process of instructing learners with curious minds and helping them learn how to conduct research.

McNair Staff Highlight: Kellee joined TRIO SSS at Emporia State in Fall of 2020 where she grew close to the directors and staff of TRIO. In Fall of 2021, Kellee interviewed and was accepted into the TRIO McNair Scholars Program, where she completed her research on the impact of discrimination against women in the corporate workforce. Kellee went on to complete her Bachelor’s but was not ready to say goodbye to TRIO. Kellee joined the McNair professional team as the Graduate Teaching Assistant in Fall of 2024, as she works toward completing her MS in Clinical Psychology. If Kellee could say one thing about TRIO’s impact on her life it would be, “TRIO gave me the support I needed to confidently strive toward and accomplish my goals and dreams.”

McNair Staff Highlight: Shanna began tutoring for ESU’s TRIO SSS as an undergraduate in 1998 and also worked for TRIO Upward Bound starting in 2000. After graduating from ESU, she sought her master’s degree while serving as a GA. Shanna then began a professional role in TRIO, working with SSS and Upward Bound until 2010. She worked in KU’s TRIO SSS program for two years, then returned to ESU in 2012 to serve as director of the TRIO Talent Search program. Shanna has served as the director of ESU’s TRIO McNair Scholars Program since we were first awarded the program on campus in 2017. Shanna always knew she wanted to be an advocate for education, but it wasn’t until she began working in TRIO that she found her true professional calling in life. TRIO is where she was always meant to be!

Ronald Erwin McNair (October 21, 1950 – January 28, 1986) was an American NASA astronaut and physicist. He died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Dr. McNair grew up in the segregated south, but never let the discrimination he faced impact his commitment to bettering himself and receiving an education. In 1976, McNair received a PhD degree in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, becoming nationally recognized for his work in the field of laser physics. He left behind a wife, two children, and a legacy of greatness. We honor him by furthering our education, encouraging others to dream big, and creating space for those around us to thrive.
