Alumni spotlight! If you'd like your story to be featured, email [email protected].

"My name is David Poersch, and I am an ESU grad and TRÍO alumni. I currently live in Kansas City, MO and am a Clinical Adoption Consultant for Oracle Health. To say that TRIO “helped” me would be an understatement- it was fundamental to my growth as a young adult. I was in TRIO from 5th grade all the way through my senior year of college.

Before college, the program gave me the crucial chance to visit college campuses I would’ve otherwise not toured on my own, because my family lacked time and money. TRIO gave me a chance to understand what I wanted out of college. They gave me a view of different schools and career opportunities I never would’ve considered.

TRIO helped take away a lot of the uncertainty and stress of college applications. I was provided free vouchers for the ACT test and given direct assistance in applying for FAFSA. Both these services allowed me to focus solely on preparing for the exam and figuring out the financial costs of school- two of the biggest challenges first-generation and/or lower-income families face.

Once in college, I almost considered dropping out. TRIO was able to provide me with FREE tutoring for the classes I was struggling with, and I saw major improvements in my grades. My outlook on school had changed. Tutoring alone turned the impossible into a possibility, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without that.

I know my story is one of thousands, but I hope it’s compelling enough for the next generation of students who might need a little extra push in seeing the opportunities in their future."
