BEHREND MBA FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Ozgun C. Demirag

Dr. Demirag is an associate professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management. She completed her undergraduate studies in Turkey, and received her MS and PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Penn State Behrend in 2009, she taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a visiting assistant professor. She has had some industry experience in scheduling and production planning with companies including Norfolk Southern and Bosch.

Dr. Demirag's research interests are in operations and supply chain management, particularly in the application of game theory to supply chains. Her work has been published in a number of prestigious journals and she currently serves on the editorial board of Production and Operations Management and Transportation Research Part E. Recently, she received the Early Career Scholarship Excellence Award by the Black School of Business.

Dr. Demirag teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. At the undergraduate level, she teaches operations planning and control, which is an SAP-intensive course delivered online to Behrend and World campuses, as well as the introductory supply chain management course. At the graduate level, she teaches quantitative methods for business in the MBA program, and previously taught integrated business analysis. She enjoys teaching in the MBA program, and one main reason for this is that the MBA students are highly motivated to learn and therefore put great efforts and attention towards their courses. This motivates her to offer opportunities for providing the best learning experience to her students.

INCOMING MBA STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Brennan Zanella

Brennan is from Butler, PA and graduated from Penn State Behrend in 2013 with a B.S. in Finance and a specialization in personal finance. He currently works in Pittsburgh, PA as a Credit Analyst for BNY Mellon. Brennan’s biggest achievement to date was his involvement in the creation of the Mary Behrend Monument. He believes that the monument would not have been completed without the dedication and determination of all the student leaders involved in the project. It was an honor for him to work with them and to finally see the woman, who generously donated her summer home and farm to Penn State, be honored in a way she deserved.

Brennan will be starting in the Cranberry MBA Program this fall and is most looking forward to getting back in the classroom. He believes that Behrend has some of the finest professors around and he’s eager to work with and learn from them again. He plans on using what he learns in the MBA program to help further his career in finance and has hopes of one day working as an executive at a financial institution or hospital.

BEHREND MBA FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Al Warner

Dr. Warner received his undergraduate degree in marketing from Park University in Kansas City, MO and an MBA and PhD from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.

For roughly 20 years, Dr. Warner has worked in technical and marketing positions with manufacturing firms including Butler Manufacturing, Devine Lighting and Holophane Lighting. He’s mostly taught strategy courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, but now exclusively focuses on the MBA program where he teaches courses in strategy, organizational behavior and international business. His research has mostly been in the corporate strategy field with papers on acquisitions, alliances, real options and how firms manage rapid change in their product environments. Finally, he is also the MBA director and loves the position because he is very dedicated to trying to deliver the best educational experience for our MBAs that we can. He believes that they are fun people and that it's great to be kept on his toes by inquisitive, thoughtful students.

Earlier this month, the Innovation Commons lab was dedicated at Penn State Behrend. The lab will serve as an idea laboratory to support small businesses and startups and the space will be open to all Penn State Behrend students, faculty members and employees at Knowledge Park. It is configured so that ideas can be simultaneously explored from technical and business perspectives and the meeting space is equipped with AutoCAD modeling programs, scanners and 3D printers for prototyping.

A $50,000 Invent Penn State seed grant supported the lab’s development. Invent Penn State is an initiative launched last year to leverage the University’s research, knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit in order to drive job creation, economic development and student career success. On hand for the dedication were Penn State President Eric Barron, Penn State Behrend Chancellor Ralph Ford and others.

The October 2015 Jobs Report and Hiring Trends:

The US economy added an astounding 271,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 5%, which is now at the lowest level since April 2008. The unemployment rate for college-degreed workers 25 and older, those in greatest demand by employers, held at 2.5 percent for the third consecutive month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The rebound in hiring in October was driven almost entirely by companies that offer services such as software design, banking, health care, shopping and dining out. White-collar businesses added 78,000 profession jobs, health care added 45,000 positions, retailers took on 44,000 new workers and restaurants hired 42,000 people. Builders also beefed up employment by 31,000, reflecting an upturn in construction over the past year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a far stronger than expected October jobs report Friday.
