It's that time of year again!

The 15th annual AHSA art show is officially accepting submissions! The show is open to ALL University of Oregon students and will take place the week of April 19th to accompany the AHSA Graduate Student Research Symposium “Nevertheless: Art as Civic Duty.”

We are looking for work that engages with (but is not limited to) issues surrounding art as civic duty, lived experiences, political engagement, marginalized communities, and identity.

: During the month of March, the JSMA will be highlighting women artists in our collections. PARK So Eun is a Seoul-based contemporary Korean minhwa (folk) painter. She received her B.A. in Korean painting from Dankook University in Yongin in 1998 and her M.A. from Chung-Ang University in 2003 and has exhibited widely, winning various awards. Currently she teaches minhwa painting at the Seocho Cultural Foundation in Seoul. Her works are based on traditional art, but explore the relationship between reality and the unconscious.

Hung Liu was trained as a social realist and muralist in her native China, Liu blends artistic influences to explore culture, gender, identity, and memory.

In 2018, Liu was the focus of a one-woman exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., titled “Hung Liu in Print.” As described by the NMWA: “To make her prints, [Liu] uses an array of printing and collage techniques, developing highly textured surfaces, veils of color, and screens of drip marks that transform the figures in each composition. Describing printmaking as ‘poetry,’ she emphasizes the spontaneity of the layering process, which allows each image to build organically with each successive layer.”
