University of Oregon School of Architecture & Environment

University of Oregon School of Architecture & Environment Our programs in architecture and interior architecture emphasize collaboration and a noncompetitive, rigorous learning environment.

A Culture of Collaboration

Our programs in architecture and interior architecture emphasize collaboration and a noncompetitive but rigorous learning environment. Studio work is evaluated using individualized discussion and written assessments rather than letter grades, and a supportive studio culture is encouraged through facilitated peer teaching and teamwork. The department doesn't dictate a sp

ecific design aesthetic or ideology, but encourages intellectual inquiry as the basis for design exploration. Responsible Design

The Department of Architecture is dedicated to recognizing designers’ accountability for their impact on environmental, social, and cultural systems. Studio teaching serves as the primary means of integrating all design issues--e.g., cultural, social and behavioral, environmental, contextual, technological, theoretical, economic, political, and professional, resulting in meaningful design achievements. Innovation and Leadership

The department is nationally recognized for the achievements of its faculty and students in innovation and environmental sustainability research including the design of buildings, interiors, and communities. Student organizations assume leadership roles in curriculum development, extracurricular programs, and community service. Graduates are broadly educated designers who attain leadership positions in the professions of architecture, interior design and allied fields.

The 2024 Pacific North west preservation Field School wrapped up on Friday after 3 weeks of instruction in on Whidbey Island in Washington State. This year’s PNWPFS was held in Deception Pass State park, which has a collection of buildings and structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, providing infrastructure for visitors coming to enjoy the rugged coastline and old-growth forest.

Field school students worked on a Civilian Conservation Corps Comfort station constructed in c.1938 as part of the Cranberry Lake parking area extension project. Students completed Log Purlin and Rafter Repairs, Window Reconstruction and Glazing, Hardware restorations, and general restorative cleaning on the structure.

Congratulations to all Field school students and instructors on a the work completed in Field School this year!

The latest news from the 2024 American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment (AIA COTE), in partnership with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), Top Ten Awards for Sustainable Design Excellence further reinforces the expertise and claims made by the historic school, as a former SAE student and current alumna captured one of the top ten student awards.

Sofia Gonzales, BArch ‘24, was selected as a winner for the 2024 COTE Top Ten for Students Competition, with Assistant Professor and Director of the Baker Lighting Lab Siobhan Rockcastle, Kelly Kottlowski (MArch ‘23) and Octavio Guttiérez (BRIC Architects) identified as the faculty sponsor and project collaborators, respectively.  Gonzales’s project rose to the top in the face of fierce competition from hundreds of project entries across ACSA’s member and affiliate schools in the US and abroad. Gonzales’s winning project, titled Widely Accessible Vocational Education Center (WAVE), bases its idea on the symbolic nature of waves to represent the continuous and progressive nature of learning. Taking this concept and building on its foundation to deliberately create a space for students to engage and interact with their environment and each other, through new and novel ways.

COTE Top Ten award program was founded on the idea that sustainability and design excellence are two sides of the same coin. Now in its twenty-ninth year, the COTE Top Ten has become the industry’s best-known award program and has recognized innovative projects from current SAE students and alumni with numerous awards, reinforcing SAE as one of the top schools for sustainability excellence.
