Students for Education Reform (SFER) - University of Oregon We are mobilizing Oregon Ducks to raise awareness and take action to close the achievement gap and end educational inequity

We are a new organization that is kicking off this year! We are a group of students that have a passion for education reform. We want to educate and advocate students on educational inequity and closing the achievement gap. Issues with education are ones that can be fixed and we believe that the University of Oregon campus is the perfect place to start creating solutions and movements to address t

hem. Our organization will hold informational discussions and debates, identify what issues we want to focus on in regards to Oregon ed reform issues and push those issues towards legislators in Salem to make the changes we want to see. We are not an ASUO funded group at this time.

Who remembers watching Precious Knowledge waaaaay back in the beginning of this year? Watch this debate on ethnic studies in Arizona. What do you think about changing school curriculum to reflect the cultures of the student population? Is it helpful for empowering students or does it create greater separation by race in schools?

“The most necessary task of civilization is to teach people how to think. It should be the primary purpose of our public schools. The mind of a child is naturally active, it develops through exercise. Give a child plenty of exercise, for body and brain. The trouble with our way of educating is that it does not give elasticity to the mind. It casts the brain into a mold. It insists that the child must accept. It does not encourage original thought or reasoning, and it lays more stress on memory than observation.” ― Thomas A. Edison
