The UO's Master's Industrial Internship Program is unique in the way it partners with industry and the way it teaches students to work in the industrial environment. It prepares students for success in industry.

From the program's inception, industry has helped drive curriculum development. As a result, we can respond quickly to changes in industry and technology and our students are better prepared for the realities of the industrial environment. The extended duration of the internship (9 months) means students are fully integrated into company life, gaining genuine work experience and relationships. This deviates from the standard internship model where interns are given "projects" and removed from the day-to-day responsibilities of being a scientist in industry. About 90% of our interns receive full-time job offers at the end of their internships.

Students enter industry with a solid foundation that allows them to hit hte ground running and be valuable members of a team in an industrial setting. They learn to problem solve in real time on actual problems in a real work environment instead of focusing their time on research in an academic environment, which is decidedly different. In industry the goal is to work toward a solution in the interest of the company and the bottom line. Problem solving and creativity is required to come up with creative solutions to problems on a tight time-line. Our curriculum helps students learn how to work in a team to come up with solutions in real time in the industrial environment.

Professional development is integrated into the curriculum, so students are better prepared to represent themselves in an interview and be contributing members to a team in an industrial environment.
