Special Collections and University Archives is the primary repository for the University of Oregons archives, rare books, historic photographs, and one of the largest historical manuscripts collections in the Pacific Northwest. Our mission is to acquire, preserve, and make available a clearly defined set of primary sources and rare books, reflecting the written, visual, and audio history and cultu

re of Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and selected aspects of American and world history. Our diverse collections support all types of research, from K12 education to international scholarship. University of Oregon Special Collections and University Archives is delighted to announce the Brian Lanker Fellowship, a new program supporting research in the Brian Lanker archive through an annual award of $4,000. Lanker was a Pulitzer Prizeโ€“winning photojournalist working in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, exploring broad topics including the history of Black America, pop culture, athletics and Oregon history.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Anyone, regardless of institutional affiliation or profession, is invited to apply.

The second biennial plenary, โ€œMemory Work for Black Lives,โ€ will be held on April 12-13 at the White Stag Commons at the University of Oregon Portland, with a hybrid component for off-site attendees.

This two-day event is co-organized by University of Oregon Libraries and human rights organization, Dont Shoot Portland. The plenary will center the voices of Black activists and artists as well as librarians, archivists, UO students and faculty to discuss the power of Black archival memory. The emphasis of this event will be on community archiving initiatives, and how such efforts can instigate significant positive change for the people they serve, as well as shift the dominant historical narrative to be more accurate and inclusive.
