A group of MSJ students traveled to Mexico City in early 2026 to report on stories shaping life in and around the city — from women reclaiming public art spaces to efforts to preserve centuries-old farming traditions. 🇲🇽 Their stories were featured on WTTW - Chicago PBS!

Since 2005, newspapers in areas with U.S. military bases have disappeared at a rate four times higher than the national average. And the remaining outlets are covering these bases less and less – since 2016, there has been a 40% decrease in the number of stories about local military issues. 🗞️🇺🇸

Zachary Metzger of Medill Local News Initiative was recently on CNN to share findings from his study on loss of local news near U.S. military installations.

Congratulations to Medill Professor Desiree Hanford who was presented with the President’s Award from the SABEW - Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing at its annual conference! 🎉

Hanford was honored for her contributions to business journalism and to key SABEW initiatives, including being the first chair of the education committee and serving as a member of almost all SABEW committees. 🗞️
