Northwestern University ESAM: Engineering Sciences & Applied Math

This summer, the NSF-Simons Center for Quantitative Biology is hosting an undergraduate research program. The program allows undergraduate students majoring in biology, engineering, mathematics, statistics, or physics to participate in hands-on laboratory or computational research that applies mathematical concepts and methodology to understanding mechanisms in biology. Participants will also be encouraged to attend activities such as, faculty research presentations; day trip to a local museum or Argonne National Laboratory; a presentation on applying to graduate school; and other cohort outings.

The NSF-Simons Center for Quantitative Biology at Northwestern University seeks to integrate hypothesis-driven mathematical modeling, data-driven mathematical analysis, and advanced imaging, genomics, and metabolomics tools to investigate the complex interplay between genetic programming and extrinsic inputs during organismal growth and development.

ESAM faculty William Kath, Madhav Mani, Rosemary Braun, and Niall Mangan are involved in the center's ever-growing research efforts.

Welcome to Northwestern's Engineering Sciences & Applied Mathematics Department!

Applied Mathematics involves the application of mathematics to problems which arise in various areas, e.g., science, engineering or other diverse areas, and/or the development of new or improved methods to meet the challenges of new problems.

We view Applied Math as the application of mathematics to real-world problems with the dual goal of explaining observed phenomena and predicting new, as yet unobserved, phenomena. Therefore, the emphasis is on both the mathematics, e.g. the development of new methods to meet the challenges of new problems, and the real world.

We invite you to join our community as we explore and empower our students to pursue deeper applications of mathematics.
