The original Pride flag was created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker after being inspired by the growing LGBTQ+ rights movement following the Stonewall Riots. The flag was originally ideated and commissioned by Harvey Milk for Baker to design and create. The first version of the flag featured eight colors, each representing a different meaning including life, healing, sunlight, and nature.

In 1979, the flag changed into the widely recognized six-color rainbow design seen around the world today. The flag has many different versions as it is still evolving over time.

This Pride Month, we recognize the history behind the flag and what it represents.

To students whose college plans have been unexpectedly disrupted, the University of Evansville is committed to helping you navigate your options with personalized advising, transfer credit evaluations, and financial aid guidance.

UE is also offering an Oaks to Aces Transfer Scholarship of up to $10,000 to current OCU undergraduate transfer students affected by the suspension of undergraduate programs. This scholarship is available in addition to academic merit scholarships and need-based aid.
