Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia

“Life at its best is a creative synthesis of opposites in fruitful harmony.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his ideals, and his messages about standing up against opposition to harmony amongst each other. His dream of people, no matter the difference, coming together in unity is still a mighty vision to this day. Let us continue this vision and his legacy with action and service.

Take time today to reflect on and think about Dr. MLK, Jr.’s ideas and how you can incorporate them in your daily life and actions so that justice, unity, and harmony may prevail in the world.

Each Thanksgiving, we thank YOU - our zealous undergraduates who are persevering through a difficult school year, our dedicated alumni who have found creative ways to connect and support Brothers across the country, our selfless donors who continue to support our programs and scholarships, and our wonderful friends who continue to be great allies of Phi Mu Alpha.

Without you, the vision of a Brotherhood in Music that started in Boston, Massachusetts, would not have endured for well over a century.

As we celebrate all that we are grateful for, take a moment to tag, text, or call a Sinfonian you know and tell him why you’re thankful for him.

For the Spring 2026 academic term, the SEF is proud to award up to $12,000 in scholarships and grants, including four named endowed scholarships and six new, one-time grants honoring prominent Sinfonians and highlighting the three program areas of support offered by the SEF: scholarship, music, and education.

Details can be found at https://sinfoniafoundation.org/scholarships.

Applications opened October 6, 2025. The program is open to all undergraduate collegiate Sinfonians in good standing. The application period will end at 12:00 Midnight Central Time on November 24, 2025. Awards will be announced December 1, 2025.

The application is built with an email workflow which will request that Chapter Presidents certify that applicants from their respective chapters are members of the chapter in good standing, and also will request that Faculty Advisors provide academic achievement verification.

This special Fall program is intended to re-introduce the Scholarship Program to collegiate Brothers. Grants will be paid to the Financial Aid office of the host institution in December. The entire amount of each scholarship and grant will be available to be used in the Spring 2026 academic term.

Today is Sinfonia’s “Founder’s Day” – the 127th anniversary of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the world’s oldest and largest music fraternity, founded in 1898.

In 1898, Mills founded the Sinfonia Club at the conservatory, which was destined very soon to become Alpha Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. He was elected an honorary member of the club at its first meeting on October 6, 1898.

Often referred to as the “Father of the Sinfonia,” Mills had been a familiar figure at annual conventions until his last years when his work would not permit his leaving Boston. He served the Fraternity as Supreme President from 1901-1902 and 1904-1905 and was elected “Honorary Grand Supreme President for Life” in 1904.

In 1954, former Supreme President Percy Burrell recalled his long friendship with Mills. He noted above all Mills’ humility and the fact that Mills became somewhat uncomfortable when given recognition as having “planted a seed in the hearts of some young men studying music at the New England Conservatory in Boston back in 1898, that had blossomed forth into a national brotherhood that year after year had been making its impress throughout the country…” Burrell wrote further: “I can still see what seemed to be a wistful yet joyous expression on his face whenever this thought was expressed in his presence.”

Ossian Mills died from pneumonia at his home in Wellesley, Massachusetts on December 26, 1920. He had been ill for only a few days, and “his death came as a great shock to his associates and assistants to all of whom was familiar the story of the great service which he rendered in the earlier years of the school” and which he “unremittingly continued” during his later years. He is buried in the family plot of a small, wooded cemetery in Thompson, Connecticut.

May we continue to honor Ossian's vision.
