Sam Preston, Director of Public Safety, has considered himself a member of the USI community even before he was officially a Screaming Eagle.

“I’ve kind of been connected to this place longer than I’ve actually worked here. For 26 years, I was with the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, and USI was part of my patrol district. I worked events out here all the time. Commencement, basketball games, things like that. So by the time I officially came here, it already felt familiar.

I always thought this could be a good transition someday. Law enforcement is a young person’s game, and while I loved my career and would do it all over again, I knew I wanted something that still let me serve people. This felt like the same kind of work, just in a different environment.

When I first came on as Assistant Director of Public Safety, it just fit. I got to use the same skills, the same mindset, still focusing on helping others. Now, as Director of Public Safety, every day is different. There’s no such thing as a routine day here. You might be working with students, faculty, visitors or families all in the same day.

Some of the most memorable moments have been the big ones. Getting to help organize the celebration when our Women’s Softball Team won a national championship was special. Being part of events like an Inauguration and Solarpalooza, those stand out too. But honestly, even the difficult days stick with you. When something hard happens on campus, seeing people come together and put others first, that says a lot about this place.

What’s kept me here is that sense of community. Public Safety touches everyone on campus. From the President to a first-year student, we’re here for everyone. We get the chance every day to make people feel safe and supported.

At the end of the day, that’s what matters to me. Being part of something where you can serve others, make a difference and know that what you’re doing matters. That’s what keeps me coming back.”

FYI to those on and off campus this summer: University Parkway south ramps from campus (entering and exiting eastbound Lloyd Expressway) will be closed after today, Tuesday, May 26, for paving work. The closure is expected to last around 30 days.

Eastbound traffic exiting campus will be rerouted along Clarke Lane to Schutte Road. Traffic entering campus from the west will also be directed to Schutte Road and Clarke Lane. Detour signs will soon be on campus to direct traffic.

For more than 40 years, Dr. Pamela F. Hopson D’23 (right), Executive Director of Campus and Community Strategy, and Ingrid Lindy ’90 (left), Manager of Human Resource Information Systems, have watched USI’s history unfold firsthand.

Their careers began just a month and 15 days apart in 1979. Since then, they’ve worked under all five USI presidents, seen campus growth through new buildings and a rising student population and witnessed some of the University’s most iconic moments.

Teekay Nalwimba has never felt drawn to one place. But USI has felt like home since she stepped on campus.

“I didn’t start at USI. I started at Ivy Tech, just trying to figure things out. That’s where I got involved and became Vice President of Student Government, and I realized I actually liked being part of something bigger than just going to class.

I had the opportunity to go to Purdue University, but I didn’t want to commute or stay that close to home. I wanted to feel like I was building my own life somewhere new. USI made sense because my credits transferred, the class sizes felt similar and it seemed like a place where I could actually get involved.

When I got here, I didn’t know anyone, so I kind of forced myself to put myself out there. I joined a lot of things, but becoming a Student Ambassador is what really changed things for me. I’ve always had some social anxiety, and marketing is all about talking to people, so I saw it as a way to push myself.

I just kept putting myself in situations where I had to talk to people, and over time, it got easier. I started meeting all different kinds of people, too. Some of my friends are the ones I study with and help keep me on track, and others are the ones who will randomly go do something at midnight or play intramurals late at night. I needed both.

I grew up in Zambia, lived in Norway and then moved to Indiana, so I’ve never really felt tied to one place. Coming in as a transfer, I didn’t expect to find that here, but I did. A lot of that came from just saying yes, even when it felt uncomfortable, and not waiting around for things to happen.”
