The Mat-Su/Copper River District 4-H Program is a force for good youth development in Alaska. With 269 members and dozens of volunteers, they made a strong showing at the Alaska State Fair last month. About 144 members auctioned off homegrown cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, rabbits, chickens, pheasants and geese! Now that’s leadership in action.

Today we celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. Here in Alaska, we honor the Native peoples that have sustained themselves on these lands for Millenia.

At the Alaska Tribes Extension Program—a part of the Cooperative Extension Service—our goal is to promote food secure Tribes while upholding traditional knowledge and traditional food gathering. We do this through relevant outreach, listening, learning and networking with Tribes throughout the state as we work to better understand and educate ourselves about Tribal food sovereignty.

"In October 1988, 20 men carried the Wolf Totem Pole: Everyone's Grandfather (left in photo below) across the frozen UAF campus. That night the totem was raised in a traditional Tlingit ceremony. The 20-foot pole is made of western red cedar from Ketchikan and features the three figures of eagle, wolf, and bear. This particular totem pole honors the traditional teaching method of a master artist working alongside his apprentices."

Instead of cows and plows, Bristol Bay 4-H youth learn about salmon and heritage, including their Yup'ik culture. Making healing lotions with local plants, exploring regional fish and game, doing traditional arts and crafts and cooking are favorite activities. Last year, over 1,000 residents participated in Bristol Bay 4-H.

Working throughout Southwest Alaska, Bristol Bay 4-H serves an area about the size of the state of Ohio. There aren’t always roads and the weather doesn’t always cooperate. But for more than 10 years these leaders have actively delivered 4-H programming to low income areas, sent lessons and supplies to villages, participated in local fairs and annual celebrations and built a strong and widespread 4-H program in collaboration with local schools and native organizations.

Today is Alaska 4-H Day!

In 2024, a group of dedicated 4-Hers worked with state representatives to officially establish the first Wednesday of each October as Alaska 4-H Day. Youth traveled to the state capitol in Juneau to support the bill. Some of those youth and other 4-Hers were present when the bill was signed into law by Governor Mike Dunleavy on August 24, 2024, at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer.

Now that’s 4-H leadership skills in action.

4-H clubs aren’t always about livestock. In Nome, Alaska—4-H youth are learning to care for sled dogs, manage a team and learn to mush.

With 20 kids registered, this new club is pushing traditional 4-H animal-care skills to include canines. At the Pup Mush in April, 4-H youth mushed 1- to 3-dog teams. And thanks to fundraising efforts by volunteer leaders, the club purchased two lightweight sleds to ensure future lessons.

October 4-10 we celebrate 4-H programs across Alaska and the country! Do you know what the four “H”s stand for in 4-H? Head, heart, hands, and health. These are the four values members work on through fun and engaging programs. To learn what 4-H means to its members, visit 4-h.org/about/.

At the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the Cooperative Extension supports 10 different 4-H districts in the state—each with their own programs and staff—but all intent on helping young people learn by doing. Find a club, become a member, and learn more about Alaska 4-H at www.uaf.edu/ces/4-h/.
