This year GeoFORCE Alaska was honored to receive a Careers that Rock! Grant from Waaime Division of SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration). This grant program encourages universities to introduce high school students to careers in mining, metallurgy, petroleum geology, and similar fields.

This grant supported participation of 26 rural Alaskan high school students in their third GeoFORCE Alaska summer academy. This year they traveled to the Pacific Northwest, where they built on their previous two summers of geologic knowledge and learned about igneous rocks, volcanic landforms, and rocky coastlines. Every summer, industry mentors introduce GeoFORCE students to careers in natural resource management, mining, and energy. This year, mentors from ConocoPhillips, Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, and NMS shared how they entered their fields and what makes their work rewarding.

Beyond the Careers that Rock! program, WAAIME administers a large scholarship portfolio. Students interested in a career in mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology or a related field may be eligible to apply for a WAAIME scholarship. See the WAAIME Scholarship Application Guidelines for details: https://www.waaime.org/ApplicationGuidelines.aspx
