Ben Jones' and Phillip Wilson's epic COAST-X 2026 snowmachine traverse is featured in the current issue of Eos. Learn about their 2,000-mile science expedition last Spring, connecting 15 coastal communities from Bethel to Utqiaġvik in conversations about observations, experiences, priorities, and concerns related to coastal change. Kudos also to co-authors Jan Olson, Bill Tracey Sr. and Chris Maio.

A scientific expedition connected community perspectives, landscape conditions, and coastal hazards across nearly 3,200 kilometers of Alaska coastline.

Spotter buoys are devices used to measure various parameters of the oceans surface, such as waves. This buoy was originally stationed offshore of Hooper Bay, before it broke free in the ice last winter. It’s currently drifting in the central Bering Sea, and recent readings from the map here show us that large waves ranging from 18 to 20 feet are incoming to the area 🌊

Shoreline erosion has been an ongoing phenomenon across Western Alaska and beyond.

Public radio station KDLG shares how 2026 shoreline surveys conducted by UAF scientists (Chris Maio and Reyce Bogardus), along with observations from community members in Dillingham, showcase the steadily increasing rate of shoreline erosion in the area. A combination of natural and climate change-driven processes has contributed to drastic shoreline erosion, threatening homes, roads, and other infrastructure.

The crashing waves of Bristol Bay are affecting much more than the fishing vessels out on the water. Western Alaska is facing some extremely drastic shoreline erosion, and in some areas it appears to be accelerating. KDLG’s Ryan Berkoski dug into why.

Here comes another oceanographic instrument! 🔬

Moorings are the topic of this week’s post. Most moorings collect data from the sea floor, such as ocean current measurements, waves, temperature and salinity data. All that data can be examined when the mooring is brought back to the surface. It will remain on the ocean floor for around a year before coming back onto the ship.
