Often it is argued that GMU students don't need the ability to defend themselves, that Mason, and the surrounding area is perfectly safe. While Fairfax does have a low crime rate, violent crime happens here.
Yesterday, March 6th, 2012 at 11p.m. five GMU students were robbed at gunpoint in a Fairfax house. Luckily no one was hurt, but this serves as a potent reminder that Fairfax is no immune to crime.

The students were studying, playing video games and chatting when the men entered the home and began yelling and demanding money and valuables, police said.
