Visiting Filmmakers Series at Mason

See your world differently. If you want to consider how images do their work, consider a minor in Film & Media Studies.

Images in movies, on television, and on the net move and inspire us, structure our ideas of race, class, gender, and sexuality, community and identity. The GMU minor in Film & Media studies explores mass culture in its visual manifestations and helps students develop an informed awareness of culture and media, ideological tendencies, and effects on daily experience. Committed to interdisciplinarit

y, the program addresses the increasing complexity and multiplicity of visual cultures and offers students the tools with which to read a variety of texts, including film, television, video, and new media. Most course work is offered through the Departments of Communication and English, with other courses available through the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, AVT, and Film and Video Studies. The two required courses provide an introduction to the languages of film and popular media and modes of analysis appropriate to each. They are prerequisites for all advanced work in the minor. Students select four additional courses designed to introduce a more specialized level of study. Students may decide to focus on film, television, or the study of mass culture, or they may choose some mix of courses that suits their interests.

Two films produced by students in Professor Rebekah Wingert-Jabi's Video Production for Social Change class were featured at Herndon-Reston FISH’s 2024 FISH Fling, the non-profit organization's annual fund-raising event, on June 9, 2024. She introduced the films at the fundraising event and read a statement from the director, Bodhi Bryan-Roig. Congratulations!

Students still have the opportunity to enroll in the fall 2024 FAVS 366 Video Production for Social Change course. Open to all majors and prior film experience is required.

Have you admired our Mason Film Festival poster? School of Art student Emily Rehr came up with the design!

Emily is graduating with a B.F.A in Graphic Design (spring, class of 2024). She currently works as a photographer and graphic design assistant with the New Student and Family Programs office and as an assistant trip leader for Outdoor Adventures. Emily has a background in design and photography and hopes to combine her strengths with her interests in environmentalism and wildlife. In her spare time she loves to read, rock climb, and hike. She plans to purse design after college, hoping to work amongst local conservation groups or with the National Parks Service.

As she navigates the social, medical, and personal complexities of that choice, she delves into some of humanity’s biggest mysteries in this expansive, whimsical, and revelatory film.

The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2023, where it won the Special Recognition HOPE AWARD.

Join us for a provocative discussion of the documentary film All Light, Everywhere with filmmaker Theo Anthony and former Charlottesville Chief of Police, RaShall Brackney. The film explores the shared histories of cameras, weapons, policing, and justice. As surveillance technologies become a fixture in everyday life, the film interrogates the complexity of an objective point of view, probing the biases inherent in both human perception and the lens.

He gives advice to future filmmakers and discusses his latest film, Tale of Tarot, which he worked on with fellow alum Aaliyah-Janay Williams. Our Story

Each semester, the Visiting Filmmakers Series at Mason brings to campus a variety of films and directors. Our first guest, in 1995, was Cheryl Dunye: she inspired us to “make our own history.”
