While some professors worry that they are two steps behind technology, scholars in Mason’s Department of Computer Science pride themselves on staying two steps ahead. However, that wasn’t enough for Associate Professor Bo Han, who wanted to deepen the educational experience for students. He did just that with the 4-VA@Mason project “Innovating Point Cloud Processing for Networked Systems.” Learn more at: https://4va.gmu.edu/4-vamason-computing-team-gets-ahead-of-the-game/

At the core of 4-VA@Mason's Collaborative Research Grants is the mantra: "two heads are better than one." Professor Kelly Schrum took this concept to heart, engaging colleagues at five Virginia universities to build historical thinking, original research, and digital literacy skills into their history of higher education classes. This 4-VA project brought together seven faculty members, nine student researchers and 100+ students in classes, producing beneficial results. Learn more at: https://4va.gmu.edu/

Innovative Education

These ideals form the strong foundation that is 4-VA, a statewide initiative designed to encourage shared resources and cutting-edge thinking in support of furthering higher education in Virginia.

Together, we are stronger. The relationships we’ve built with our partner schools – James Madison University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech – bring valuable assets to bear on the challenges and opportunities facing the state University system. In the Venn diagram of 4-VA, each school leverages its unique strengths and resources to advance a shared goal. Combining the technological resources from one campus with the rich historical archives on another and the engineering expertise through a third can more effectively accelerate the pace of change and in the production of a final product than each working independently.
