The William Prestion Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge, with two spans, one built in 1952 and one in 1973, carries around 30 million vehicles annually. The age of the structures, combined with ever-increasing demands on the route over the Chesapeake Bay, has several entities looking for new solutions for crossing the bay.

One of those solutions may come from a team of engineering students from George Mason University’s Department of Systems Engineering and Operations Research (SEOR). The team won best paper in the climate and sustainability track at the Andrew P. Sage Memorial Capstone Design Competition and best presentation in the decision analysis track at the General Donald R. Keith Memorial Capstone Conference at West Point.

Happy #WorldElephantDay from George Mason University! #FunFact: Elephants only sleep 3️⃣ to 4️⃣ hours a night! 🐘💤 Did you know? In 2021, Eva Noroski (#Mason2022) spent a month assisting 2017 Mason Alumna and Elephant Trails keeper Ashley Fortner at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, researching how these massive mammals can get optimal sleep. “Sleep is super important for the elephants because they don’t actually do a lot of it,” said Fortner, who studied for a year at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC). Noroski, who grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said she chose Mason after researching schools with the best conservation programs. “It’s a great program (SMSC) where you get really personal attention, as well as amazing practical experience that you will not just be able to find anywhere else,” Noroski said. “You are put in a position where you are pretty much handed useful, practical experience in the real working world. “That’s invaluable when you’re an undergrad and trying to get your foot in the door,” she said. #MasonNation 💚💛 🎥: OUB

Juneteenth 2022 - The Enslaved People of George Mason Memorial

Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Black Independence Day, #Juneteenth marks the occasion in 1865 when Gordan Granger, a Union general, arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved people of their freedom and the Civil War’s end. Juneteenth is a day of celebration to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. #Mason50 marked the dedication of The Enslaved People of George Mason Memorial on the George Mason University Fairfax Campus. The memorial is the centerpiece of the campus’s recently renovated Wilkins Plaza, named for Black civil rights leader, Mason professor, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Roger Wilkins. It spans roughly 300 feet and features several markers, including a fountain and the silhouettes of Penny — an enslaved girl whom Mason gave to his daughter — and Mason’s “personal assistant” named James. The names of other people enslaved by Mason appear throughout the installation. “In many ways, this memorial is an invitation for people to come and sit in the messiness, the complexity of the past and be comfortable with what makes us uncomfortable.” -Dr. Wendi N.
