May is 🛑 Stop the Bleed🩸month, and just like that, 44 more people in our community are equipped with an official Stop The Bleed ACS certification!

Today we wrapped up Critical Care Boot Camp on the Fairhope campus with our senior nursing students. This two day event is a great way to kick off each semester and help set our students up for success. Teams rotated through 12 different advanced stations, including EKGs 🫀, hemodynamics 📈, airway management 🗣️, critical care 💉, ABGs and chest tubes ⚖️, ventilators 🫁 , trauma🚨, skills🩺, pediatrics 👶🏼, HROB and NICU 🤰, and neurologic emergencies 🧠. In addition, all students received their official Stop The Bleed ACS 🩸certification. We even got to celebrate the Green Team’s 💚 victory in the trivia game and hear an inspirational message from our own Coastal Alabama Community College alumna, Delanie Quinnelly. 💜

We previously looked at holding pressure or wound packing to stop bleeding, but if bleeding is severe, you may need to apply a tourniquet. The graphic below describes the steps, but here is a recap of important things to know:

🩸Ensure that you have dialed 911.
🩸Tourniquets are only for use on arms and legs.
🩸Apply the tourniquet at least 2-3 inches ABOVE the injury.
🩸Never apply a tourniquet over a joint.
🩸Apply the tourniquet as tightly as possible before turning the windlass.
🩸Turn the windlass until bleeding stops or until you can no longer turn it.
🩸Secure the windlass in the clip to prevent it from unwinding.
🩸Write the time of tourniquet application.

🤕 It’s important to note that tourniquets will cause pain to the victim, so you may need to reassure them during this process. However, do NOT loosen or remove a tourniquet unless properly trained or instructed to do so by a healthcare professional.
