We had an incredible opportunity to visit the City of Bridgeport POTW with our Occupational Safety Air & Water Pollution class! 💧

A huge thank you to the team for taking the time to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the wastewater treatment process and the critical work that goes into protecting our water resources every day.

🔧🦺 Ergonomics in Action at Fairmont State! 🦺🔧

Our Occupational Safety students took on the Hand Tool Dexterity Test recreated by Professor Himes and Professor Toothman!

Students used wrenches and screwdrivers to disassemble and reassemble bolts while being timed, and may even test their performance wearing gloves. ⏱️🧤

This hands-on activity helps students understand speed, precision, dexterity, and real-world ergonomic challenges in the workplace.

Learning by doing, that’s how we build industry-ready safety professionals at Fairmont State!

From Professor Chapman

4:00 AM wake-up call
5:30 AM on the road

Today was one of those long, full, why-this-work-matters kind of days.

I had the opportunity to represent the Fairmont State University Engineering Department at FSU Day at the Capitol, alongside outstanding student representatives.

From 7:45–11:45 AM, we met with legislators to share the impact of our engineering technology programs, advocate for our students, and highlight the workforce value our graduates bring to West Virginia.
No rest for the road weary.

By noon, it was straight to Glenville State University.
From 1:30–5:00 PM, I delivered a workshop on how to build an Industrial Advisory Board and why these partnerships are critical for academic programs and industry alike, as part of our ARC POWER Grant work.

Meaningful conversations, shared challenges, and real momentum toward strengthening regional collaboration.

Grateful for the students, colleagues, and partners who make days like this energizing, even before sunrise. This is what investing in people, programs, and partnerships looks like.

It was a privilege for Fairmont State University’s Occupational Safety students to attend the U.S. Premiere of Andreza Araújo’s film, A Day to Remember last night in Colebank Hall.

Hearing firsthand stories connected to the 1968 Farmington Mine Disaster was incredibly moving. As safety professionals, we often study incidents like this through a clinical lens, regulations, root causes, corrective actions. Last night was a powerful reminder of the people, families, and communities behind those lessons and why our work matters.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and contributed to the panel discussion. Your voices continue to guide and inspire the next generation of safety leaders.

Our Occupational Safety students are using their classroom knowledge to make a difference right here on campus! 🦅

They’re assessing campus spaces and offering thoughtful recommendations for opportunities for improvement, all as part of their senior course and capstone projects. This hands-on work provides them with valuable experience while fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement at Fairmont State.

We’re so proud of our students for applying what they’ve learned to real-world situations! 💪
