This is a design for an Accessory Dwelling Unit in the Brookside area of Kansas City that I recently completed. It will be detached from the primary residence and include garage parking on the ground floor. Until very recently these developments were prohibited by zoning ordinances in Kansas City. Thankfully an ordinance allowing ADU's is now part of the KCMO municipal code and homeowners have a useful and exciting way to develop their property in a way that provides flexible living arrangements for extended family and/or secondary rental income. I've done several of these and have a firm grasp on the design rules and regulations. Give me a ring if you are considering adding one to your home.
An Accessory Dwelling unit is a small, secondary living unit on a single-family home's property, sharing the same ownership as the primary residence. Also known as mother-in-law units or backyard cottages, ADUs can be detached or attached to the main house, such as a basement apartment, garage suite, or guest house. ADUs provide additional space, can increase property value, and offer flexible housing for family members or tenants.
