Recognizing that Indigenous Peoples are thriving today is a beginning. Learning about them and their connection to the land we all call home is a next step. Experiencing traditional art and music—and hearing Indigenous languages—is a transformative experience representing the best education we can give our students and ourselves.
This October, Bristol celebrates its inaugural Indigenous Peoples' Day* in 2022 with programming over three days (Oct. 11-13) on all of our campuses. We will host Indigenous poets, Lucille Lang Day (Wampanoag), Ron Welburn (Gingaskin Cherokee, Assateague, Lenape, African American) and Native artisan MarvinLee Martinez, a fourth-generation potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico. MarvinLee is the great-grandson of the late world-renowned Maria Martinez, whose pottery is exhibited in museums worldwide. Finally, we will host a Pow-Wow Demo on the Fall River Campus, on Oct.12, and New Bedford's Wings Court, on Oct.1, with the Sint Sink Singers. The week will be filled with energy and enlightenment for the entire community. Find the full fall schedule here.
Please bring your students!
*The public is welcome and encouraged to attend any and all of these events.
