On Dec. 9, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education announced a proposed settlement agreement that would end the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan. The settlement must be approved by the court before it can be implemented.

Borrowers can use Loan Simulator to begin exploring other repayment options. For more information, visit StudentAid.gov/courtactions.

Tuition is due August 18, but completing your FAFSA could make a big difference. Even if you’ve qualified for free college in the past, you must submit a new FAFSA each year to stay eligible.
