A former hourly worker for Dr. Deirdre Prischmann-Voldseth - Sarah Schroeder - who's now doing her PhD at the U. California Riverside, has just discovered 12 new species of insects (within the Hemiptera: Miridae, or the plant bugs). Being a devoted fan of Taylor Swift, Sarah named a new Australian mirid genus and four species to honor her.
She named one genus after Taylor Swift (Swiftiephylus), which includes 4 species inspired by the famous singer and her music: Swiftiephylus taylorae (shown in the attached picture), Swiftiephylus amator (album: Lover 2019), Swiftiephylus intrepidus (album: Fearless 2008), and Swiftiephylus poetorum (album: The Tortured Poets Department 2024).
(As a footnote, Sarah is engaged to be married to Dr. Mark Boetelās son, Collin, in July of 2027.)
