Jonathan Monaghan: Lush Pixels
Curated by Beth Giacummo
February 12 - April 17, 2026

Farmingdale State College Memorial Gallery presents Lush Pixels, a focused survey of artist Jonathan Monaghan, featuring prints, sculpture, and video produced over the past decade. The exhibition traces Monaghan’s interplay of art history and technology to explore desire, anxieties, and power in the digital age.

This exhibition will be on view from February 12 - April 17, 2026. The Farmingdale community is invited to join us for a special lecture with the artist on Thursday, February 12 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM in the Campus Center Ballroom A, followed by a reception on Thursday, February 12 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Memorial Gallery in Hale Hall.

Monaghan’s practice is defined by a precise and glossy visual language that borrows from the aesthetics of luxury and advertising, while critically examining their ideological underpinnings. Through meticulously 3D-rendered imagery, the artist constructs speculative worlds in which historical references collide with the infrastructure of contemporary digital life, producing works that are both seductive and unsettling.

The exhibition includes selections from After Fabergé, a series of large-scale prints in which photo-realistic 3D graphics are used to reimagine the iconic luxury of the Fabergé egg. Also featured is Soft Power, a body of prints and sculptures appropriating the tradition of aristocratic portraiture, replacing human subjects with opulent assemblages of modern furniture, consumer electronics, and surveillance technology. Here, historical modes of representation become a lens through which Monaghan examines authority, wealth, and the invisible power structures of technological control.

Completing the survey is Gotham, a series of sculptural aluminum prints that transform nineteenth-century New York Beaux-Arts architecture into fleshy, organic surfaces; emphasizing the blurry boundaries between the natural and the man-made in the digital age.

Together, the works in Lush Pixels articulate a critical vision of the present, one in which historical opulence and contemporary technology are inseparable. Monaghan’s practice invites viewers to consider how the visual languages of the past continue to shape our relationship to the digital systems that increasingly govern everyday life.

*This exhibit is made possible with support from the ASC Auxiliary Service Corporation.

His work has been featured in The New York Times and Vogue Italia. His work sits in numerous public and private collections including The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. and the Microsoft Art Collection. Font Flow:
Typographic Experimentation in the Age of AI
Curated by Beth Giacummo

Exhibtion | September 8 - November 14, 2025

Farmingdale State College Memorial Gallery presents a special two part exhibition on view September 8 - November 14, 2025. A special lecture will take place with exhibiting designers on Thursday, October 9 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM in Campus Ballroom A with a reception later that day in Hale Hall from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.

Font Flow: Typographic Experimentation in the Age of AI
As photography reshaped the meaning of painting in the late 19th century, artificial intelligence is now redefining the landscape of graphic design. Font Flow: Typographic Experimentation in the Age of AI explores the evolving relationship between human creativity and machine-generated design through the material language of typography.

In this section of the exhibition, four typographers engage in a direct challenge with AI, responding to randomized prompts for hypothetical university lectures. Each prompt imposes formal and material constraints—pairing specific artistic or historical influences with typographic choices randomly selected from the Font Flow platform. Designers have 90 minutes to create and submit their work before the same prompt is processed by a large language model (LLM), which generates its own design interpretation. The resulting human- and AI-made posters appear side by side in the Font Flow gallery, stripped of attribution, leaving viewers to discern which is which.

This exhibition brings the digital experiment into physical space, inviting visitors to confront their assumptions about authorship, creativity, and the future of design. The act of distinguishing human from AI work becomes a meditation on intelligence, intuition, and the essence of typographic excellence in a post-AI world.

Participating artists included Thomas Jockin, Hrant H Papazian, Miguel Escamilla, and Kateryna Kovalevska

Typography for Reading: Human Ingenuity in the Age of AI
As AI continues to shape the future of typography, one vital area of ongoing research is the design of fonts and typesetting systems that support better reading performance. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), two out of five U.S. schoolchildren are not proficient readers—a status that often persists into adulthood.

This aspect of the exhibition showcases design interventions at multiple scales: from typefaces that support handwriting development to paragraph-level typesetting that enhances reading comprehension. The range of approaches on display that despite advances in AI, human creativity remains a powerful force in shaping how we read.

Participating designers include Underware (Akiem Helmling, Bas Jacobs and Sami Kortemäki), Thomas Jockin and Nadine Chahine, Nick Lum, and Renato Casutt
