The GlasStation

The GlasStation A Glass Blowing studio located in Farmville, NC - Part of ECU's School of Art and design. The first glass class began in spring semester, 2017.

East Carolina's GlasStation, which resides about 15 west of main campus in Farmville, NC, is the result of a grassroots effort by The Farmville Group, a volunteer economic development association interested in growing the local economy through the arts. The Allen and Stowe families of Farmville donated a former Gulf gas station to the DeVisconti Trust. ECU leases the GlasStation building from the

Trust, and have outfitted the GlasStation with equipment to create a functioning hot glass studio. The School of Art and Design in the College of Fine Arts and Communication at East Carolina University offers undergraduate and graduate ART classes for ECU students focused on glass blowing and making at the GlasStation. Continuing education classes for the community will begin in late March, 2017. For more information, please email [email protected]. Photos copyright Cliff Hollis, ECU News Services

Check out the last demo night's work. We made glass . . . . FROM SPACE!!!!!

First, I should introduce 'Zip Zorp'. They're a friendly little green alien. Zip Zorp was made as an in class demonstration at the beginning of this semester and based on a doodle a student had done on one of our boards.

For the demo night, we made a friend for Zip Zorp that came to visit them in their flying saucer.

We also made a blue bottle . . . .FROM SPACE!!!!

We had a "Fast and furious" vessel night during the demo night this past Friday. Ok, technically we still worked at a moderate pace, but did decide to do many shorter demos as opposed to 1 or 2 more complicated pieces.

We spent the first half of the evening making pieces inspired by ancient Roman glass. We made several variants of bowls with folded lips and feet. A super "Fast and Furious" mini vase/scent bottle (they only take 2-3 minutes), and a pitcher with a Roman style handle.

The second half of the demo night was themed around surface texture. We made a pink bowl with a crackle "Ice glass" surface. It was a big round bowl, but by popular request we ended up making it floppy. And also made a green bowl with thin thread wraps on the surface.

Join us this coming Friday. March 20th, from 6pm - 9pm.

The weather has warmed up, but still not as hot as our glass. Come see what we create and make an evening of it here in Farmville.

Better late than never.

Check out what we made during last Fridays demo night. We were making an elaborate bowl that was constructed from 7 separate cups of glass, creating alternating stripes of opaque and transparent brown . . . .but it exploded. It's glass, that happens sometimes.

So, we decided to use the shards on a different piece - a more freeform piece where we let the glass do what it wants. I call them bag vases. A good way to turn a failure into a success.

Oh, we also made a goblet. . . . It also cracked. It came out nice otherwise. It was one of those nights - it's glass, that happens sometimes.

Check out what we made at our demo night last week.
It's banana's 🍌!

I've had a glass banana as a potential demo in the back of mind for a while now, but recently saw some very lovely glass bananas made by and realized, "The time has come".

We did a banana peel as the first piece - a warm up to see how the process would go. We then went all in and made a peeled banana.

Huge thanks to and for being great assistants.

Be sure to join us next month on February 20th.

*Duct tape nat included
