Final day of Brock Place and Voice had us heading to the Oakland Athletics Glenn Burke pride day before coming back for our final debrief and field zine. As one student said tonight: I think back to all the q***r people and what Alvin (one of our stakeholders) said (that he lives in a place surrounded by ghosts) and how they’d just be so happy to see us now.

Day 6 had us back in the Castro, where we had a wonderful discussion with the LGBT Asylum Project before we headed back to do research and deliver deliberative forums. Then, the students went out to choose their own adventures while the faculty team made it over to see the Pacific Ocean and walk Golden Gate Park to find the bison.

One more day to go!

Day 5 was all about place-as-text and exploring new areas to help build various perspectives for the students’ deliberative forums. This found us in the Haight-Ashbury area and the Mission, including a specific trip to a zine shop (Silver Sprocket) in the Mission District.

Great Day 4, which started with our first trek to the Castro. Students explored the GLBT Museum before perusing the Castro and meeting with author and book master Alvin Orloff at Fabulosa Books (if you haven’t read Disasterama yet - highly recommend). The students even picked out their outfits the night before because they were excited to meet and talk with Alvin!

From there, students made their back to have a dinner where they made their own San Francisco-style burritos before we ventured to the Ray of Light Theatre to see their production of Everybody is Talking About Jamie.

We can’t wait to debrief with them tomorrow to see all of the connections they’re making!

Day 3 found us exploring the Tenderloin Museum and the site of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riots before heading to City Hall, where we visited the mayor’s office (she was out, but we met her lovely staff and got to check out the balcony view) and got to talk to three of the board supervisors.

Before heading back for our first zine-making night, we checked out the San Francisco Public Library to see whose voices we could find.

Day two had some of our favorite things! Students headed down for place as text to consider two areas: North Beach and Chinatown. We met them at City Lights Bookstore, where they read some poems from the pocket poetry series outside the store (they went inside, too!).

Then, we were welcomed back with open arms and voices to the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus again. Students got to chat with members of the chorus before we got to hear them rehearse for their upcoming show. Magic and q***r joy was found tonight!

Day 1 kicked off with a boat ride to explore the history of Alcatraz Prison, which came with a surprise stakeholder in Bill Baker, the last surviving inmate.

Then, students got to explore Fisherman’s Wharf and greet the sea lions before our evening debrief at Aquatic Park Beach. Lots of great connections already being made!

Phenomenal day 3 with pre-departure today. We learned about perspectives and practiced with our wonderful stakeholders during a make-your-own charcuterie box lunch.

We also started prepping for San Francisco and started chatting about Alcatraz and its (not as well known) history.
