School of Human Environmental Sciences, University of Arkansas

School of Human Environmental Sciences, University of Arkansas Programs focused on family, community, food, clothing, and environment. We call it science, and it is, but there's more than a little art involved.

Our majors focus on the basics of life—family, community, food, clothing and environment. Understanding the basics is the science. Making them better for yourself and for others is the art. Studying the human environment is a great way to spend your college career. Improving the human environment is a great way to make a living.

Assistant Professor Nick Johnston recently served as an expert judge at the Emerge NWA Food Festival, hosted at The Momentary, where local entrepreneurs pitched their food business concepts as part of the Cureate Courses cohort showcase.

Students from the University of Arkansas Hospitality Management capstone course partnered with entrepreneurs throughout the program, serving as sustainability consultants and helping identify and implement practical solutions for their businesses. The experience provided hands-on application of classroom knowledge while supporting innovation in the local food community.

The event concluded with a pitch competition, where entrepreneurs competed for a $5,000 award to help launch or expand their ventures.

During Faculty Appreciation Week (April 6–10), Career Connections recognized outstanding educators across Bumpers College, and we are proud to celebrate members of our HESC community.
Professor Eunjoo Cho and Instructor Suzanne Rhoads were named Bumpers College Career Connectors based on student nominations highlighting their exceptional impact. Students shared that these faculty members go above and beyond to connect classroom learning to real-world applications, helping them explore career paths, build industry-relevant skills, and gain confidence in their professional journeys.
Professor Cho shared, “Being recognized as a career connector is meaningful to me because helping students discover their passions and future paths has always been one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I strive to go beyond teaching by connecting them with community partners through my service-learning course and encouraging them to see possibilities they may not have considered. I am honored to be someone they trust for guidance and support.”
Instructor Rhoads added, “I am incredibly honored to be nominated as a Bumpers College Career Connector. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is helping students see how the work they do in class connects directly to their future careers. My goal is always to help students build confidence, recognize their strengths, and leave the classroom better prepared for the professional opportunities ahead.”
We appreciate their dedication to student success and career readiness. Congratulations and thank you for making a lasting difference!

On Tuesday, April 14, a group of 9 HDFS students from the service-learning course Parent and Family Dynamics hosted a farm-themed Family Night at Elkins Preschool for students and their families!

This marked the 6th annual Family Night led by students in this course, and it was a huge success. Under the guidance of instructor Donia Timby, students spent the semester planning every detail, from activities and materials to setup and cleanup.
Families enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities, including face painting, line dancing, a dirt sensory box, oobleck with farm animals, puppet making, trail mix snacks, tractor painting, and a fishing pond.
The night was filled with laughter, connection, and meaningful experiences for both families and our students.
One student, Jordan Smith, shared:
“Planning and being a part of this event was something so special. It was such a great learning experience to work hands-on with a local school to create a fun and welcoming environment for the families of Elkins Preschool. Our instructor, Donia Timby, did an outstanding job guiding us to make this night the best it could be. It was a huge hit, and so many families came out. This is an experience I won’t forget.”
We are so proud of these students and the impact they made in the community!
