HDFS is currently comprised of 8 faculty members who currently engage in research and teaching that recognizes and promotes the diversity of individuals, children and families. Undergraduate students earn a degree in Human Environmental Sciences with a major in Human Development and Family Sciences and may choose from three concentrations: Lifespan/Family Sciences, Child Development, and Birth thr

ough Kindergarten. There are currently 154 undergraduate majors. In regard to graduate study, a Master of Science in Human Environmental Sciences with a concentration in Human Development and Family Sciences is offered and there are 25 graduate students (including on-line) currently enrolled.

Designed specifically for educators, administrators, childcare providers, and HDFS students, this day will deliver actionable, evidence-based practices to support young children's emotional and psychological well-being.

The Human Development and Family Sciences program is pleased to recognize the Jean Tyson Child Development Study Center for its recent honors from the Office for Education Policy (OEP).

Among its recognitions, the center received the OEP Regional ECE Quality Award for Infant/Toddler, based on CLASS observation data.

These distinctions reflect a sustained commitment to advancing early childhood development through research-informed practice and high-quality learning experiences. We extend our congratulations to the faculty and staff whose work continues to elevate the field.

On Tuesday, April 14, a group of 9 HDFS students from the service-learning course Parent and Family Dynamics hosted a farm-themed Family Night at Elkins Preschool for students and their families!

This marked the 6th annual Family Night led by students in this course, and it was a huge success. Under the guidance of instructor Donia Timby, students spent the semester planning every detail, from activities and materials to setup and cleanup.
Families enjoyed a variety of hands-on activities, including face painting, line dancing, a dirt sensory box, oobleck with farm animals, puppet making, trail mix snacks, tractor painting, and a fishing pond.
The night was filled with laughter, connection, and meaningful experiences for both families and our students.
One student, Jordan Smith, shared:
“Planning and being a part of this event was something so special. It was such a great learning experience to work hands-on with a local school to create a fun and welcoming environment for the families of Elkins Preschool. Our instructor, Donia Timby, did an outstanding job guiding us to make this night the best it could be. It was a huge hit, and so many families came out. This is an experience I won’t forget.”
We are so proud of these students and the impact they made in the community!

One Day. One U of A. Supporting Research That Improves Daily Life.

On One Day, One U of A, the Human Development and Family Sciences program invites you to support K9 CozyGo, a faculty‑led research and design project addressing real challenges faced by disabled service dog handlers.

K9 CozyGo is a hands‑free, retractable leash‑pack system created to improve safety, mobility, and independence for individuals who rely on service dogs. Donor support helps fund the next critical steps, including continued prototype development, safety testing, student participation, and preparation for broader implementation.
