🔧 The rise of AI coding tools is reshaping what it means to become a software engineer.

In our latest article, CIT graduate student Obadoni explores the growing dilemma early-career engineers face in the age of automated code: how to balance speed and efficiency with true technical understanding. While AI tools can accelerate development, they also introduce real risks around skill development, security, and long-term engineering growth. The key question is no longer just “can we build it faster?” but “do we understand what we’re building?”

The path from computer science classrooms to professional software engineering has never been straightforward, but the rise of automated coding tools has changed the nature of that transition. Early-career engineers are stepping into workplaces where AI systems can generate functions, debug errors,

What makes a math problem “hard” for humans and for AI?

At Midwest Speech and Language Days 2026, CIT graduate student Micah Helzerman presented research investigating how large language models measure and interpret mathematical difficulty compared to human intuition and performance.

The work explored how AI-generated metrics align with human-assigned difficulty scores, using benchmarks that included Putnam competition problems and real human performance data. The findings revealed important differences between how AI systems and humans perceive challenge and complexity.

We’re proud to celebrate this achievement and excited that the paper was selected for ACL 2026, a major conference in computational linguistics and AI research.

Congratulations to Micah and everyone involved in this important work!
