UM-Flint Intercultural Center

UM-Flint Intercultural Center Belonging • Advocacy • Education The Intercultural Center (ICC) opened its doors in 2014. These students have graduated but their legacy remains through the ICC.

The idea for the ICC was established by a group of students who aspired to develop a legacy on campus. Their vision was rooted in a deep respect for each other, social justice work, and the richness and potential of cultural and intellectual diversity at UM-Flint. The ICC supports cultural student organizations and critical dialogues on UM-Flint's campus, with programming aligning with the pillars of belonging, advocacy, and education.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the power of belonging, the strength of community, and the importance of visibility.

The City of Flint stands with our LGBTQ+ residents, families and friends honoring the diversity that makes our community stronger. Pride is more than a celebration, it’s a reminder that when every voice is welcomed, our entire community thrives.

Happy Pride Month, Flint!

Lastly we’d like to highlight former programming intern Alyssia Washington!

Even though Alyssia was only a part of the ICC team for this past year she has left a mark for her abilities as a presenter and facilitator with her unique background in political affairs as an organizer for Turn Up Turnout, a prize winning member of our campus’s moot court team and former Student Government Director.

We’re very glad to cheer Alyssia on in her new position as the Director of Constituent Services for State Representative Cynthia Neeley and eager to see what her future holds as she continues to complete her masters degree!

Another ICC intern we’d like to highlight is Social Media and Marketing Intern Mekka Al-Shawi!

First joining the ICC team in Fall 2022, Mekka wrapped up her UM-Flint undergraduate journey this past December at Fall Commencement graduating with a B.A. in Sociology with a minor in Writing and certificates in Women’s and Gender Studies and Undergraduate Writing

Throughout her time at the ICC she’s helped make the ICC and its work visible and accessible to the UM-Flint community from promotional materials to event recaps. Additionally to marketing she’s overseen and facilitated our Queerness in Color program in collaboration with CGS leading conversations in the intersection between race and gender amongst many groups utilizing her Sociology background.

We wish Mekka luck on her post UM-Flint journey as she makes steps towards her professional career!

As the school year has come and gone we’d like to highlight Jayden Cathey, one of the programming interns that joined us in the Fall!

Joining partway in the semester, Jayden immediately found her place as a part of the ICC team utilizing her STEM background to contribute, create and lead conversations and presentations in her own way.

It’s been an honor to have Jayden join us and we’re looking forward to see her work continue in the upcoming academic year!

In the Occupied West Bank of the 1980s, a Palestinian teenager is swept into a protest that changes the course of his family’s life. Reeling from its aftermath, his mother, Hanan, shares the story that led them to that fateful moment. Spanning seven decades, this epic drama traces the hopes and heartaches of one uprooted family, revealing not only the scars of displacement, but the unbreakable spirit of survival.

This year’s festival runs from May 5–10 and centers on the theme Remember, (Re)imagine. We are so excited for this years amazing films.
