The Department offers a major in Sociology, three academic tracks within Sociology, minors in Sociology and Family Studies, and 100% online Master's degree in Family and Community Services. The Department of Sociology and Family Studies aims to prepare students for the many occupations in human services, health care, personnel management, government, and the justice system for which preparation in

sociology, family studies, gerontology, and criminology are appropriate, or for advanced study in graduate and professional schools leading to teaching and research positions.

Sociology study abroad Italy!! 🇮🇹 🍝🥂Students traveled to Italy and visited Milan, Florence, and Rome. Dr. D’Antonio taught students about luxury consumption, high culture fashion and Made in Italy brand. We had a wonderful trip!

Alexis is a Senior graduating this Summer from the University of North Alabama’s Sociology Program with a minor is Criminology. Alexis is from Phil Campbell, Alabama. During her time in the Sociology program, Alexis’s favorite sociology class was Methods of Social Research. Alexis enjoyed the hands-on class experiences studying adverse life situations. These classroom experiences helped her see how “everyone starts their own journey at a different place than those around them, but we all ended up in the same classroom.” Alexis is interested in attending graduate school, doing research abroad, or employment in the criminology, sociology or applied behavior analysis realm after graduating. Congratulations, Alexis!

Nedra is a Senior graduating this Summer from the University of North Alabama’s Sociology Program with a minor in Criminology. Nedra is from Troy, Alabama. Nedra believes that with a sociology degree, she can be versatile professionally and apply her skills in various areas such as criminal justice, social services, research, and beyond. Nedra’s favorite sociology class has been Marriage and the Family because it really brought everyday life into focus. “It helped me understand how relationships, family structures, and roles have evolved over time and how they’re influenced by culture, social norms, and economic factors.” Her favorite memory in this class was working on their final assignment where she got to interview her cousins and her best friends through sociological qualitative research. Nedra plans on attending graduate school at the University of Auburn Montgomery. Congratulations, Nedra!

Conversations to Remember is a nonprofit organization dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens, including those living with dementia. This program is asking for your help to brighten older adults days who have been suffering from isolation.

Students volunteer just 1 hour a week to video call their older adult. The program last for 16 weeks to ensure each student can develop friendships with the senior they are matched with.

This program will provide you with mandatory training about the best ways to interact with the adults as well as regular support during your volunteer hours.

This nonprofit organization has other internship opportunities that pair very well with our Organizational Leadership and Non Profit Management tracks that include Volunteer Outreach, Senior Outreach, and Project Coordinator.
